Based on the best-selling novel by comedian Gekidan-Hitori, Flowers in the Shadows (a.k.a. Kage Hinata ni Saku) is an ensemble comedy-drama about nine pathetic, yet lovable people whose unremarkable lives take an unexpected turn. Continuing to show new acting depths after his acclaimed performance in Hana, V6's Okada Junichi leads a talented cast that includes top actress Miyazaki Aoi (NANA), Miura Tomokazu (Adrift in Tokyo), Tsukamoto Takashi (A Song to the Sun), Ito Atsushi (Saiyuuki), Hirayama Aya (Back Dancers!), and veteran actor Nishida Toshiyuki. Director Hirakawa Yuichiro (Sono Tokiwa Kare ni Yoroshiku) brings a warm touch to his second film, giving extraordinary life to anonymous faces in the shadows.

Deeply mired in debt, compulsive gambler Shinya (Okada Junichi) resorts to joining a scam ring to pay off his loans. While living in the gutters, he meets Hisako (Miyazaki Aoi), a young woman tracing the story of her mother's (also Miyazaki Aoi) past love with a comedian (Ito Atsushi). In another parts of town, B-list idol Myako (Hirayama Aya) is on the verge of losing her job, but an opportunity suddenly appears that changes both her career and her relationship with otaku idol-chaser Yusuke (Tsukamoto Takashi). Meanwhile, power businessman Ryutaro (Miura Tomokazu) is so inspired by his encounter with a homeless man (Nishida Toshiyuki) that he too decides to begin a new life on the sidewalks. As a typhoon descends upon Tokyo, unrelated lives begin to cross over and a strange twist of fate befalls these quirky souls.

此片改編於日本相聲“劇團一人”的首本小說《陰日向に咲》，“劇團一人”亦曾上演過《電車男》的電視劇。小說原著描寫9名小人物爲生活努力的故事，笑中帶淚，在2006年出版後廣受好評。這是他首次執筆寫書，結果好評如潮，表現出“劇團一人”多才多藝的一面，銷量至今在日本已衝破100萬本。電影則由電視劇《在世界中心呼喚愛》導演平川雄一郎執導；宮崎葵一人飾演母女兩個角色，其他主演有岡田准一(V6成員)、伊藤淳史(電車男)、塚本高史(死亡預告)、西田敏行(華麗一族)等豪華陣容。故事講述日本東京的盛夏，生活在這個都市裡的平凡人，有光鮮體面的上班族、充滿陽光朝氣的人，也有碌碌無爲的追星族、彷徨在陰暗處的人等等，但無論是誰都在用自己的方式努力奮鬥。

在盛夏的東京，一位沉迷賭博的觀光巴士司機澤渡伸也(岡田准一飾)，因好賭欠下一身巨債，在走投無路下，決定敲詐木星小鳥老太太。但是澤渡看見她沒錢做手術，決定反過來替她湊錢，最後和老太太變成好朋友。最終一分錢也沒有騙到手的澤渡，偶然下在街上認識了壽子(宮崎葵飾)。壽子是為了完成母親的心願來到東京，澤渡在好奇心使喚下，帶她去到母親在35年前的相聲表現劇場，一起尋找以前的相聲搭擋雷太先生(伊藤淳史飾)；厭倦一直替兒子澤渡還債的上班族龍太郎，十分嚮往露宿者光仔的自由生活，想跟他交換身份生活下去；秋葉原歌星宮子和她的御宅族歌迷勇介，他們的百感交集戀愛命運。九個看似毫無瓜葛的人，卻被緣份牽引在一起，各人都來到人生交叉點……
