Kitano Takeshi first rose to massive fame in the 1970s and 80s as a comedian and television personality under the stage name Beat Takeshi. As a director, however, he went in a different direction with mainly violent crime and gangster films. After four serious films, Kitano finally took on comedy in 1995 for his fifth directorial effort Getting Any? The sex comedy rolls out a series of sketches and stories revolving around the mishaps and adventures of horny but inexperienced 35-year-old Asao (Dankan) who is obsessed with sex. Inspired by an adult film, he decides that the secret to getting laid is having a fancy car, but the money-strapped Asao can only afford a cheap domestic car. When that fails to get him a girl, he tries to upgrade his car, eventually resorting to stealing. From there on, he stumbles into more crimes and preposterous situations in his endless pursuit of getting some action.

Asao is a horny fool who believes that, if only he can acquire a car, he will be able to persuade women to have sex with him. He sets out to acquire a car or gain the money to buy one. That basically is the entirety of the plot of this hilarious film, an over-the-top comedy in the style of such films as "Naked Gun" and "Airplane".

Jokes and sight gags come at the viewer in rapid fire; even if only 50% of them are truly funny, the viewer will be chuckling almost non-stop. In the course of the film, Director Kitano Takeshi sends up the Zatoichi movies, Yakuza films, the Invisible Man, The Fly, Mothra, and lots more. (I believe that the more one knows about Japanese culture, the funnier one will find this film. However, even someone ignorant of Japan will be in stitches.)

Kudos must go to the actor who plays Asao. While going through even the most absurd of scenarios he maintains a dead-serious Buster Keaton-style deadpan face. Director Kitano also deserves credit for maintaining the high octane comedic energy level of this film from start to finish.

"Getting Any?" is not high-brow, but it is highly funny and I can recommend it highly to a mature audience.

 Underrated, underappreciated comedy Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Believe it or not, Takeshi Kitano claims that this film - not 'Zatoichi,' not 'Sonatine,' not even 'Hana-Bi' - is his best work! I know many people think 'Getting Any?' is juvenile and stupid, but it's one of the funniest films I've seen - I LOVE the Zatoichi, 'Manpole,' and Yakuza skits. This film provides more insight into Kitano's true personality than any other, and it makes me long to see some of his television work. He has an awesome sense of humor!
