The cyberpunk world of Ghost in the Shell expands again in the 2020 anime series Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. Directed by Kamiyama Kenji and Aramaki Shinji, this iteration is set in the sci-fi near future of the Stand Alone Complex continuity. In 2045, the world has entered a perpetual state of "Sustainable War," and people can feel the existential threat of AI and waning future of humankind on a daily basis. Kusanagi Motoko and other former members of Public Security Section 9 are now working as mercenaries. When mysterious beings called "Post Humans" appear amid a greater conspiracy, it's time for Section 9 to assemble again.
