Based on Chinese mystery writer Zijin Chen's 2014 novel Bad Kids, the Japanese suspense thriller Gold Boy depicts the psychological battle between a murderer who thought he committed the perfect crime and three children who accidentally witness the murder. Bad Kids was previously adapted into an acclaimed Chinese series released in 2020. Helmed by Death Note director Kaneko Shusuke, the Japanese film adaptation transplants the brutal and twisty crime drama to Okinawa. Okada Masaki plays the killer, while child actors Hamura Jinsei, Hoshino Anna and Maede Yohji portray the troubled kids who may be just as dangerous. Eguchi Yosuke, Kuroki Haru, Matsui Rena and Kitamura Kazuki also appear in Gold Boy.

On one sunny day, Higashi Noboru (Okada Masaki) pushes his wealthy in-laws off a cliff, and then puts on a show of sorrow in front of the police. It was supposed to be the perfect crime, but three kids happen to capture the crime on camera. The kids have issues of their own. 13-year-old Amuro Asahi (Hamura Jinsei) lives with his divorced mother and holds a grudge against his father who has started a new family. Asahi's friend Uema Hiroshi (Maede Yohji) ran away with his sister Natsuki (Hoshino Anna) due to problems at home. With evidence in hand, Asahi, Hiroshi and Natsuki plot to blackmail Higashi for a large sum of money.
