In the documentary Golden Gate Girls, filmmaker Louisa Wei explores the life of Esther Eng, a woman who made history, but whose remarkable achievements history subsequently forgot. A queer, female Chinese-American filmmaker in the first decades of the 20th century, Esther Eng was nothing less than a trailblazing pioneer. The native San Franciscan became the first woman to direct a Chinese-language film in the United States, as well as Hong Kong's leading female director in the 1930s. More than a biographical documentary, the film uses the life and legacy of one incredible woman to examine politics, social mores and film history.
