Just when you thought you were out, they pull you back in. Known for his iconic role as gangster Chan Ho Nam in the Young and Dangerous film series, Ekin Cheng tries to leave the triad life behind in the 2001 film Goodbye Mr. Cool. Directed by Jingle Ma (Tokyo Raiders) and co-starring Karen Mok and Rain Li, the gangster drama with a thoughtful edge is a solidly entertaining entry in the triad genre.

After being released from prison, Dragon (Ekin Cheng) takes up work at Kowloon Cafe. Once a legendary gangster, he now just wants to live quietly, especially after learning that he has a son with ex-girlfriend Helen (Karen Mok). But the news of his return sends ripples through the underworld. Helen and other old triad buddies show up at the cafe to try to reel him back into his former life.

Jingle Ma's moving triad drama is his best to date Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10

Before I saw Goodbye Mr. Cool I wasn't expecting much, given the reasonable low publicity of the title and absence of any hype surrounding its release. I soon found out that ignoring this title was a definate mistake.
Jingle Ma, camera-man turned director, is most famous for Tokyo Raiders, Para Para Sakura and numerous other action and Triad flicks. However, he takes a sharp turn this time around from his trademark playfulness and creates one of the most moving gangster films I've ever seen. First let me set the record straight - this is not an action movie. If it's adrenaline pumping shootouts and car chases you're after, look elsewhere. That's not to say there's no action in Mr. Cool, but another Better Tomorrow is not what Jingle Ma was aiming for.
The plot revolves around ex-triad, Cool Dragon (Ekin Cheng), who after spending time locked up in a Taiwanese prison, decides to change his ways and leave his life of crime behind him. Unfortunately, this proves to be more difficult than Cool had anticipated, and he is constantly pleaded to join back up with his gang and ex-girlfriend (Karen Mok). On top of that, a young boy is left at his doorstep who claims to be his son.
Jingle Ma's powerful direction in combination with the all-round flawless performances creates a realistic atmosphere and you can truly feel for the characters involved.
The score is beautifully done and succeeds wonderfully in emphasizing the emotions and atmosphere. I'm unsure of who composed it, but the man or woman behind this soundtrack definately deserves recognition.
All in all, this is a movie that should be seen by anyone even remotely interested in the subject matter - it's a film you won't forget. Fans of Ekin Cheng will be pleased to know that this is his best performance to date. God knows how many times I've sat through it, and God knows I'll still be watching it in 20 years from now. A true classic.

The DVD unfortunately, is a different matter and is the reason behind me not giving it a perfect score. The image is given in a 16 x 9 non-anamorphic transfer. The colours look fine, but the image is ruined by jagged edges and blur problems, despite having a high bit-rate. The source of these problems is undoubtedly due to the insane number of language tracks on the disc. There are two Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks, two DTS ES tracks, and two stereo tracks (Mandarin and Cantonese). This is a record as far as I'm concerned. Obviously the Cantonese DTS track is the one to go for if you have the equipment. The score sounds great coming from all speakers and there's a fair emount of rumbles from the sub, but for some reason the sound from the centre channel is often muffled and uneven.
There are no extras on the disc besides a trailer for City of Desire (I'd eat my hat if they had managed more). The disc is double sided, meaning you have to turn it over halfway through, which is slightly annoying.
The subtitles are a complete gramatical mess, but you'll understand them none the less. At such a low price, you cannot go wrong with this purchace.
