YesAsia Editorial Description

It all begins here! The popular Happy Ghost films ruled the eighties roost for teen comedy, thanks to a generous blend of campy humor, youth-oriented themes, and cute young stars. Producer/actor Raymond Wong Bak Ming is Scholar Pik, a Ching Dynasty-era ghost who shows up in the present when impressionable teen Bonnie (Bonnie Law) discovers his suicide rope. Pik can't understand the weird ways of modern girls, but he's a friendly Casper-like ghost (albeit in traditional Ching Dynasty-era clothing) who only uses his supernatural abilities to trick authority figures and other blustery blowhards who could use a good practical joke. He even helps Bonnie excel at sports, and brings fun and good times to Bonnie's Catholic School posse. But when things get rough in school and the sisters go on the warpath, it'll take all of the girls' combined moxie to stop them from getting rid of Happy Ghost! Co-starring singer Teresa Carpio and sexy Loletta Lee, Happy Ghost introduced the winning formula that would spawn four sequels, as well as the 2002 remake Nine Girls and a Ghost.

Three high school students, Bonnie, Juilet and Venus, in their last year in school together, go on their last picnic before their examinations. Taking shelter from a sudden storm in an abandoned temple, Bonnie finds a piece of rope and takes it home. With this rope she brings home a spirit of the Ching Dynasty, Scholar Pik (Raymond Wong), whose archai ways of thinking obviously clashed with the values held by a twentieth century teenager. Yet, they began to make friends with each other, and Scholar Pik even helped Bonnie to win the first price in the annual school sports day. Bonnie introduces Scholar Pik to Juilet and Venus. The three girls adore Scholar Pik's talent and magic. They begin to depend on his help in everything...

was expecting a comedy Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
when i first saw this film, i thought it would be slap stick comedy. it started out quite funny and light hearten but halfway through your left with much drama and by the end its really about learning to stand on your own to feet.

its a good lesson and i enjoyed the journey.

best scene would be when raymond wong was forced to prove his 'ghost'-hood to Sandy and Loletta. the way the scene was executed was just hilarious.

had the film could have been made any year and the formula would have still worked, only the clothing and props would have been different. a timeless classic. Nine Girls and a Ghost was a horrible adaption that lost the entire feel.

A happy film Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Twenty-four years after its original release, "Happy Ghost" remains a delight. It succeeds with a perfect combination of cute kids, youthful high spirits, a sweetly comic performance by Raymond Wong as the ghost, and just the right touch of teen drama (involving pregnancy and parental pressures for success). Apart from the 1980s fashions and music, there is a timeless quality to this film that should make it appeal to today's teens just like it appealed to their parents' generation. "Happy Ghost" is good, silly fun that I can recommend without reservation.

Pretty good, for a 1984 production Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Comedy/Thriller/Drama. Keep in mind when this film was made, and it doesn't seem too silly. It's got plenty of laughs. (I died laughing at the 'Boy George' jokes!) I was going to score this an 8, but the day I watched this movie I was in a bad mood, and then after I watched the movie I was in an unusually good mood (probably because it's so silly). So it gets a 10. The girls seemed a bit young to be "in their last year of high school," though.
