YesAsia Editorial Description

If you're looking for essential Hong Kong cinema, look no further than John Woo's classic Hard Boiled. Chow Yun Fat stars as Tequila, a rule-breaking cop whose zeal for justice is only matched by his prowess with a handgun. Tequila vows to take down super bad guy Johnny (Anthony Wong), but has to contend with soulful assassin Tony (Tony Leung Chiu Wai in a Hong Kong Film Award-nominated performance), who just might be Tequila's match with a pistol. But Tony carries a secret: he's really an undercover cop who's out to get Johnny too. Newly aligned, the pair of cops set out to take down Johnny and his pet enforcer Mad Dog (Guo Zhui) – but there are scores of gun-toting bad guys in their way! How unfortunate for the bad guys...

John Woo's last nineties Hong Kong film before moving to Hollywood, Hard Boiled marked the fifth collaboration between Woo and Chow Yun Fat. The pair first worked on the classic A Better Tomorrow, before gaining international attention with the blood-soaked hitman saga, The Killer. Arguably the most entertaining collaboration between Chow and Woo, Hard Boiled has it all: charismatic heroes, vile villains, themes of honor and righteousness, and of course plenty of slow-motion, guns-blazing action. The capper is a nearly hour-long siege of a hospital, which includes a memorable two-minute, 42-second tracking shot that ranks among the most exhilarating action sequences put to film! For diehard Hong Kong cinema fans, and indeed action film fans everywhere, few movies are as revered as Hard Boiled.

Professional Review of "Hard-Boiled (1992) (Blu-ray) (Remastered Edition) (Hong Kong Version)"

March 6, 2007

This professional review refers to Hard Boiled (DTS Version) (US Version)
There are two types of John Woo fan. There's the John Woo fan who prefers The Killer, and there's the John Woo fan who likes Hard Boiled the best. Now, this is not to say that, in expressing a particular love for one film, the fan is immediately and necessarily prohibited from taking any pleasure from the other option - far from it! A fan of The Killer may still groove on Hard Boiled and vice versa. But as much as they still enjoy that other option, no fan can hold both films in equal regard.

Both are great films. Both are directed by Woo, obviously. Both star Chow Yun Fat. Both deal with similar thematic material, and both feature some brilliant action set pieces. However, despite these similarities, The Killer and Hard-Boiled are very different films, and the difference between them is not due to something that one film has that the other doesn't, or something that one film does better than the other, but instead comes from a rather startling disparity in tone between the two. It is in this disparity that the reason for most fans' preference for one film over the other lies. "The Killer is too dark!" the Hard Boiled supporters cry. "Too morally messed-up!" "But still," reply fans of The Killer, "Hard Boiled is too lite-on!"

I prefer The Killer. There, I've said it. But even if I do think that Hard Boiled is a bit lite-on I still think it's super-cool. I've yet to watch it in a cinema, but it's apparent even from my puny TV screen at home that Hard Boiled is much more about spectacle than The Killer (which is by no means a bad thing). Things explode. A lot. Cars, motorcycles, gangsters, and even a hospital get the complete pyrotechnic treatment. The performances are just as, haha, incendiary; Chow Yun Fat totally burns it up as cop Tequila, but he doesn't get nearly as much angsting to do as Tony Leung, who angsts just fine, by the way.

Sadly, Hard Boiled was John Woo's last Hong Kong film, but there's some incredible stuff here, including a two-and-a-half-minute action sequence filmed in a single take that boasts a higher body-count and more stunts than your average Hollywood flick has in its entire running time! So then, action-lovers, what are you waiting for? Get lovin'!

Sound problems on 2019 Blu-Ray Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
There seems to have been an unsubtle attempt to remix the audio for Dolby 5.1 (not a good idea to interfere with the original technical specification...).

It sounds terrible on a stereo system, particularly noticeable in the tea house gunfight, where the sound of gunshots has a "phasing" effect.

Whilst it remains an excellent film, I would not recommend this Blu-Ray due to audio problems.

Unforgettable John Woo shoot-'em-up Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
If you love action movies and you haven't yet seen "Hard Boiled", then make sure you get a copy as soon as possible because director John Woo raised the bar for all action films when he created this blockbuster. Starring Chow Yun Fat as a pistol-slinging police detective who breaks all the rules, Tony Leung Chiu Wai as a cop who has gone deep undercover into the world of triad gun-trafficking, and Anthony Wong as an underworld kingpin who will stop at nothing to come out on top, "Hard Boiled" has many of the most iconic moments on Hong Kong film history.

The first half of the movie is a taut potboiler about Chow's relentless efforts to bring Wong to justice and Leung's scheming to ingratiate himself with Wong. The film depicts a dark and ultra-violent world in which no one can be trusted and the legal restrictions on the cops' behavior seems to leave them at a hopeless disadvantage. The second half of the film explodes in an orgy of acrobatic (and sometimes preposterous) violence unlike anything else I've seen. Chow Yun Fat is in top form here and Tony Leung gives a nicely shaded performance. Philip Kwok also creates an indelible impression as the relentless killer who has some lines he believes should not be crossed.

My one disappointment with this film is that the endless violence in the film's second half wipes away the atmospheric thriller that forms the film's first half; the movie goes from being a complex depiction of the border between good and evil to being an over-the-top exhibition of pyrotechnics. I wish that director John Woo had been able to bring a bit more of the film's moral complexity into the film's second half. Nonetheless, "Hard Boiled" is a must-see for action buffs and it has never looked better than it does in this beautifully remastered Dragon Dynasty DVD. Among other valuable special features, the DVD offers an interesting commentary by HK film expert Logan Bey. Highly recommended.

John Woo's best Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
HardBoiled is totally HardBoiled even after all these years, nothing really can compete with this ultimate feast of bullet action!

John Woo has really made this his masterpiece and nothing from him as really come up to par with this amasing film.

This edition from Dragon Dynasty is a really good release with a nice extra DVD full of extra stuff to dig into when you have completed watching the film.

the picture is really good to the sound comes with the origional mono track aswell as an DTS or DD5.1 option.

If you like action this film is surly for you and this edition as, I guess, the best one to get if you want lots of extras and not just the film.

Ultra Violent! Ultra Cool! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Chow Yun-Fat is possibly the coolest gun-toting policeman (or gangster) to ever appear in any movie! It looks like he is having such a good time blowing the bad guys away! Even when he's shot, and he frequently is, it doesn't slow him down or dampen his spirit. Usually chewing on a match and flashing the famous Chow Yun-Fat smile, it's impossible not to like this guy. I think if you're a girl, you want to be WITH him and if you're a guy you just want to BE him! He has one of the strongest and most charismatic personalities in movies today.

Hard-Boiled is thrilling from start to finish. I've never seen a movie in this genre take place in a hospital. It's really a stroke of genius, because it's so unexpected and kind of taboo -- putting all those innocent people -- and babies -- in danger. Yet, it works! I especially like Chow Yun-Fat blowing the bad guys away while carrying a small baby who seems to be having a great time! The baby flashes a big smile every time Chow Yun-Fat's bullet hits its target, which means the baby has a big smile on its face almost all the time. This baby has a big future ahead of it in movies. He's a natural!

Tony Leung is terriffic in his role and also looks gorgeous! This movie really doesn't have a down-side. It has interesting characters, unexpected locales and tons of bullets and dead bodies! It's an exciting violent fun film which keeps your interest from beginning to end. You won't be checking your watch during this movie
