YesAsia Editorial Description
Featuring Carol "Dodo" Cheng in her signature role, Her Fatal Ways is a hilarious comedy from director Alfred Cheung. Cheng Shih Nan (Carol Cheng) is a Mainland inspector who journeys to Hong Kong with her assistant and cousin Hsiou Sheng (Alfred Cheung) to deliver a ruthless criminal (Michael Chow). But the bad guy escapes, meaning Shih Nan and Hsiou Sheng are now stuck in capitalist Hong Kong for an extended stay! A flag-waving supporter of the Communist Party, Shih Nan marvels at the "decadent" lifestyle of her Hong Kong counterpart, Inspector Wu Kei Kuo (Tony Leung Ka Fai). But despite the culture clash, the two disparate cops find the common ground they need to dispense justice - and even discover something akin to romance! But will the Party approve? An intelligent Hong Kong comedy that doesn't resort to sight gags and pratfalls to earn laughs, Her Fatal Ways was a major hit in Hong Kong and spawned numerous sequels also starring Carol Cheng. A witty mixture of action, comedy, political satire, and social commentary, Her Fatal Ways reflects the early nineties Handover fears facing the Hong Kong people, and is an entertaining, engaging motion picture to boot!
Her Fatal Ways II (1991)
More cop comedy and cultural clashes occur in Her Fatal Ways II, the sequel to the immensely popular Her Fatal Ways! Carol Cheng returns as Mainland Inspector Cheng Shih Nan, who once again leaves the Mainland with her cousin Hsiou Sheng (Alfred Cheung, doing double duty as director and co-star) to tackle a Hong Kong-related murder. They get help from their Hong Kong brethren, including Waise Lee as the brother of Wu Kei Kuo (Tony Leung Ka Fai's character from the original), and the race is on to find the bad guys! But there are still many mysterious portions of Hong Kong's capitalist culture for Shih Nan to explore, including the wonder of karaoke! Like the first film, Her Fatal Ways II is an intelligent comedy that eschews pratfalls and mugging for verbal humor and sly commentary on Hong Kong-Mainland China relations pre-1997. A climactic shootout, and the dependable comedy brilliance of Carol "Dodo" Cheng doesn't hurt, either!
Her Fatal Ways III (1992)
Carol Cheng returns as Mainland Inspector Cheng Shih Nan for more cultural comedy in Her Fatal Ways 3! This time out, Shih Nan is assigned to a top-secret mission to protect a Communist Party official in Hong Kong. The official is in Hong Kong to see his first love, but Taiwanese bad guys catch wind of the visit and plot an assassination. It's up to Shih Nan to save the day with help from a Taiwanese policeman named Yung (Chan Chung Yung), who just so happens to fancy Shih Nan! Director Alfred Cheung co-stars as Shih Nan's sidekick Hsiou Sheng, and popular character actor Anthony Wong is the the Hong Kong police liaison. Like the other Her Fatal Ways movies, Her Fatal Ways 3 strikes a balance between social commentary and fun commercial comedy, and eschews the use of cheap gags and pratfalls to earn laughs. Again the cultural clash between the Mainland and Hong Kong is explored, but thanks to a timely detour, Taiwan gets thrown into the mix too!

HK comedy at its best
There is nothing funnier than cultural differences. Here Do Do showed everybody how a top actress should be. She is so good and funny that she well deserves any award. Everybody delivers well in the film (and I do mean everybody) and if you want a good laugh, you will not disappointed. Wonderful script... haven't seen anything like this since the days when the Hui brothers had their own TV show. |

Mainland Cousin, You Are Great
Very funny movie made before the return of HK to the PRC. Carol DoDo Cheng has got all the mannerisms and body language of the mainlanders down pat. You would not believe she is the sophisticated lady that she really is after seeing her doing the mainland, party indoctrinated, public security officer role. The dialog is hilarious; she speaks a lot of different Chinese dialects. Her "bad" singing of Chinese country songs will have you falling down laughing. Even when she is undercover as a modern HK hostess, her walking is a giveaway of her PRC roots. Her handguns have red scarves attached to them, the way Chinese revolutionary operas decorate firearms. Many of the jokes and comedic situations are about her political & cultural clash with modern Hong Kong society and former KMT soldiers. This is a surprisingly good natured and intelligent comedy playing on the anxiety of the HK people's impending reunion with the mainland. A must see movie. |

Wow!
Dodo's (Carol Cheng's) best film. She is hilarious! She portrays a cop from Mainland China, trying to solve a case with a HK cop (Tony Leung), and Tony's father was in the Taiwan army. 3 different culture clashes!
Carol is the best comedic actress HK ever had! |

What an excellent comedy!
DoDo is very beautiful when she dresses properly like a lady. In this movie she has shown her great body with the white dress and her gorgeous look. |
