YesAsia Editorial Description

Before John Woo hit the big time with A Better Tomorrow, he had been on a streak of bad luck making box-office bombs that only found an appreciative audience much later on. Heroes Shed No Tears was one such underrated pre-fame work. Made in 1983 but shelved by the studio until three years later to capitalize on Tomorrow's success, Heroes Shed No Tears was Woo's first modern gunplay actioner, and it offered glimpses of the director's signature themes of heroism, brotherhood and over-the-top violence. It's also notable for being the very first film future director Peter Chan (Wu Xia, The Warlords) ever produced.

Late actor Lam Ching Ying takes a rare villainous turn as a ruthless Vietnamese colonel, while Eddy Ko stars as Chan Chung, a retired mercenary commissioned by the American government to catch a Thai drug baron in exchange for granting him and his son citizenship in the United States. With the aid of a demolition specialist (Phillip Loffredo), Chan and his band of daredevils sneak into the deadly jungles of the Golden Triangle and desperately fight for freedom with their lives...

Professional Review of "Heroes Shed No Tears (1986) (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)"

December 6, 2006

This professional review refers to Heroes Shed No Tears
Let Them Die Slowly crossed with Eastern Condors give birth to a Delta Farce Vietnam action film, it follows a mercenary (Eddie Ko) dropped into the drug-rich Golden Triangle with a gang of buddies to kidnap General Samton. Kidnap him they do, and then Ko picks up his wife and son, and a topless French lady and they make a run for the Thai border like a big happy carpool. Save pitstops for a head-scratching gambling sequences and an orgy, it's an extended chase through mondo, blood-cult territory as Ko and Co. flee Samton's ticked off army and a psychotic Vietnamese Colonel they've blinded (Lam Ching-ying) who kidnaps the children of a local tribe (ooga booga stereotypes) in order to make them hunt down Eddie Ko and turn him into human satay on a bamboo skewer.

The gruestrewn carnage nestles next to scenes of mawkish, pro-family sentimentality, the mixture boiling over in absurdist sequences. In the middle of a fight with bloody-eyed natives wielding machetes and erupting from the ground, one of Ko's cohorts casually asks "Where's the kid?" before skewering a native. One minute Ko is a killing machine, the next he's an addled suburban dad who can't keep track of his son. Part gruesome carnage, part sloppy sentimentality, part wet, red grindhouse chum, this picture defies logic and defines grotesque.

The pedigree on this film is impeccable. Eddie Ko and Lam Ching-ying turn in perfect performances (Lam Ching-ying goes at his role with the crazed devotion of a Judy Garland impersonator done up in natty military drag, one eye oozing blood and pus), Peter Chan (Comrades, Almost a Love Story director) was an assistant director, and Patrick Leung (Task Force director) was a writer on the project.

Unworthy of being dismissed, but unworthy of the praise it's garnered, this movie will affect you, whether you're laughing so hard you cry, or crying so hard you laugh. Heroes Shed No Tears - but you will.
