YesAsia Editorial Description

The arrival of a sensual beauty from Mainland China sparks a series of unexpected events and changes in the impoverished neighborhood of Hollywood, Hong Kong. Chaos begins to stir in the nearby roast pork shop run by an obese man and his two sons, and things heat up when a young gangster falls in love with her. Cheated of love and money, the men will face uncertain futures as their shantytown nears its imminent demolition and the various faces of the mysterious femme fatale are gradually unveiled.

Fruit Chan's Hollywood Hong Kong, the second installment of his "prostitution trilogy" following Durian Durian, won him Best Director at the 39th Golden Horse Awards, and scored a record number of nominations - 14 in all - including Best Film, Best Actor for Glen Chin and Best Actress for Zhou Xun.

Pointless and boring Customer Review Rated Bad 1 - 1 out of 10
This movie made absolutely no sense to me. How in the world anyone can enjoy this garbage is beyond me. The synopsis sums it, a Shanghai girl comes to town and all hell breaks lose. Well, not really, only two groups of people are affected, a pork butcher family(4 people) and some online porno kid (2 people, he and his girl). This movie was NOT funny or exciting. The mainlander was definitely easy on the eyes but that's all it had going for it. There's no struggle between rich and poor or good and bad. Just a girl that wants to get money and she doesn't care how she does it.

Great movie!! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This is an awesome movie. It's funny in a very dark and twisted way. Its protrayal of how the new immigrants live in Hong Kong is priceless, and is an absolutely must see for any who's interested in Hong Kong culture. Be forewarned though: certain scenes may too disturbing for those who have an easily upset stomach.

Good movie but did not rock my world... Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
This movie was original and well acted. It was also humourous but it did not move me like some of the other Art films from Hong Kong or anywhere for that fact. Looking forward to more Art films from HK.

HK art films Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
The reason HK has comparatively more commercial films and less artistic films, whereas Mainland China and Taiwan mostly produce artistic films, is because China and Taiwan do not have a developed film industry like Hong Kong does. Taiwanese directors, in all their brilliance, have virtually no domestic audience. They are internationally renowned, but many of their films are unwatched at home. Same with Mainland China directors. The HK film industry, in contrast, offers a greater variety that includes both commercial and artistic films that are actually screened to a domestic audience, rather than just at art festivals. And for anyone who thinks that Taiwan film is superior to HK, just look at the results of the Golden Horse awards where HK films dominated. Truth is the Taiwan film industry is struggling, even more so than HK's. And the Chinese film industry has always been one that struggled with censors and inadequate funding. China has Zhang Yimou and the 5th/6th generation directors, Taiwan has HHH and Edward Yang, but HK also has WKW and Fruit Chan, who are undoubtedly two of the most interesting directors to emerge in the last decade.
