YesAsia Editorial Description

Go back to school days filled with young love, jealous rivalries and flying fists in the nostalgic blockbuster Hot Young Bloods. Directed by Lee Yeon Woo (Running Turtle), the hot-blooded youth film is set in a provincial town in eighties Korea and features hot young stars Park Bo Young (A Werewolf Boy), Lee Jong Suk (No Breathing), Kim Young Kwang (Good Doctor) and Lee Se Young (Adolescence Medley).

As the leader of her high school girls' gang, Young Sook (Park Bo Young) strikes fear into the hearts of classmates, but she harbors a crush on playboy Joong Gil (Lee Jong Suk), who takes pride in his checklist of romantic conquests. Joong Gil is out to woo every girl except Young Sook, since she's a childhood friend and also the object of rival school bully Gwang Sik's (Kim Young Kwang) affections. Fights break out left and right when Young Sook gets jealous over Joong Gil's pursuit of transfer student So Hee (Lee Se Young), and Gwang Sik realizes that something might be going on between Young Sook and Joong Gil.

Set in a rural town in 1982, Young-sook (Park Bo-young) is the feared leader of a female gang at Hongseong Agricultural High School. Although she is known for her toughness and foul mouth, she s ecretly has a crush on Joong-gil (Lee Jong-suk), the biggest playboy in school. Joong-gil is a legendary Casanova whose single glance has the ability to make girls' hearts melt, and he's attempted to woo all the girls at school, except for Young-sook. That's because Gwang-sik (Kim Young-kwang), the leader of a rival school's male gang, views Young-sook as his girl. Then a new female transfer student (Lee Se-young) from Seoul arrives at their high school. So-hee is beautiful, innocent-looking and different from the other girls, and Joong-gil falls for her instantly. The jealous Young-sook picks a fight with So-hee to prevent her new rival from encroaching on her secret crush. Trouble brews as Gwang-sik, suspicious of the ties between Young-sook and Joong-gil, also harasses So-hee to instigate Joong-gil.

Easily one of my favorites! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This movie has a lot of mixed reviews amongst the korean community (Older male generation loves it and reminds them of their childhood, while younger females don't get the humor), but as a foreigner watching the film, this easily became one of my favorite korean comedy films. This is one role I am happy Lee Jong Suk took into consideration.

This movie has just the right mixture of hilarity, realism, and humanity. It mixes the everyday misunderstandings between people (school bullies, love interests, even family) during that timeframe, but really pushes the funny side of it before the reality of how tragic it can really be hits you. You'll be laughing one minute, and then solemn the next.

I also love the film locations and hair styles. It really takes you back into that timeframe. :)

Dandy romance, retro high school beat em up Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This movie intros with one of those wide screen panoramics as Joong Gil (Jong Suk Lee) rides his bike amidst a green and natural splendour with his latest roll in the long grass clutched to his chest, her sunny smile answering many things as they both hurtle along the road on Joong Gil’s bicycle. But for smooth playboy student Joong Gil, his female pillion is just another classroom conquest from his photo love check list, another smitten girl wooed, fed, kissed and charmed with a trophy grass stained white school shirt. But the sore side of sweetness in ‘Hot Young Bloods’ for Joong Gil anyway are two things (apart from all the fisticuffs and brutal gang scraps) – one his childhood friend Young Sook (Bo Young Park) who feels more than a twinge of jealousy that Joong Gil, who dates nearly every girl in his class, seems to avoid her. What could be wrong? Well, Young Sook is the school muscle, keeping the lower upstarts in place and leads her posse of heavies to sort out any trouble or insolence for one. Also, Young Sook is the moll to ‘gangster boy’ Gwang Sik (Young Kwang Kim), a rival gang leader who with his wide boy Danny Zuko vibe doesn’t take nicely to anyone fancying his girl...especially dandy boy Joong Gil, who even wooed Gwang Sik’s sister and left her heartbroken. Many a time Gwang Sik bumps into Joong Gil his boot, fist and grimaced lip show their disdain to Joong Gil’s presence. Gwang Sik’s sister’s broken heart could be Joong Sik’s broken bones if he plays his cards wrong again. So Joong Sik keeps logical distance.

But aside to hard boiled rivalries and jealously (and a vegetable down the trousers of one of Joong Gil’s friends in a train carriage dare), there are more sensitive reasons for Young Sook’s bullying tactics. For one she hates her rural farm family life and feels cluttered inside her stifling, toiling surroundings (i.e. bored more than her mundane threshold can take). Also there are family issues of her own relating to Joong Gil’s father and mother. Secretly she loves Joong Gil and even ‘forces’ him on a date with her, which he casually refuses. But when super cute pop socks beauty So Hee (Se Young Lee) joins the school ranks and deemed the Brooke Shields of the school, yep, Joong Gil is soon homing in on his new female conquest. But So Hee proves a more difficult and principled girl to be charmed, kissed and romped with, and with memory torn Young Sook taking note at this new ‘rival’, things begin to get a bit complicated.

Bright Young Things Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
So much, that threats are made when Gwang Sik believes in error Joong Gil is taking serious advantage of Young Sook’s emotions (and other near kissy bits), and with Soo Hee deemed a girlfriend to Joong Gil, Gwang Sik and his heavies bring an unsuspecting Soo Hee to revengeful task. With the latter so butt hurt at her brutal ordeal and partly relating to Young Sook, Soo Hee orders Joong Gil to ‘kill’ Gwang Sik and prove his love to her. Trouble is Joong Gil is the romantic type not a fighter, certainly not a killer - but fight he does (well eventually) which he sorely regrets.

For a movie with Young in the English title all four actors also compliment that (Bo Young, Young Kwang, Se Young and Jong Suk...three out of four? Well Jong is sort of Young isn’t it?). It’s certainly a film with retro influences of wide trousers, John Travolta Saturday Night Fever vibe, ‘An Officer and a Gentlemen’ take and even the late Bernie Nolan heard here with song ‘I’m in the Mood for Dancing’. As a S Korean school movie set in the 80s retro past although the decade is different, Jong Suk dressed in the school clobber of the day does bring to mind Sang Woo Kwon in ‘Once Upon a Time in High School’ (set in 1978). But ‘Hot Young Bloods’ is certainly not as vicious as that film or ‘Gangster High’ with a more moderate and romantic drama feel about it. Saying that though, of our two admired leads, their character’s have the crap kicked out of them to gainsay, but nothing as graphic as GH though.

One nice thing I loved about this....Bo Young Park next to tall Jong Suk Lee which is magic to say the least considering their height differences, that universal charm of such things never totally wanes. Cuuuttee. Bo Young, pet, you’re a half-pint charm :D, which is also nicely complimented by Se Young as a Hara (from Kara that is) looking So Hee. For a teen SK movie set in a 1982 rural high school, it’s a 1980 ‘Pretty in Pink’ of sorts and although quite rough at the finale, is mostly a romantic comedy teen flick (with a bit of beat em up hassle). Jong Suk, is he on his way to join Soo-hyun Kim in the mass popularity stakes? Looks like it I think.

Packaging is good. The set is one of those larger slip case types with DVD case inside and features some character postcards, a nice slim photo scene booklet and SNSD’s Yuri at the VIP premier on the making of disk (well, some waves and camera flashes anyway). Both Region 3 however.
