YesAsia Editorial Description

The "Dried Female" and her "Bucho" are back! After a hugely popular manga series and two drama series, Hotaru no Hikari now makes the leap to the big screen with its first feature film! When we last left the lovely couple – a professional woman who spends her days lazing around and her perfectionist boss – the two finally overcame their difficulties and became husband and wife. The film picks up on their lives two years later, with the married couple going off to Rome on their honeymoon! In addition to Ayase Haruka and Fujiki Naohito returning as Hotaru and her boss/husband Takano for their special Roman holiday, the Hotaru no Hikari movie also stars Matsuyuki Yasuko (Smuggler) and Johnny's star Tegoshi Yuya.

Hotaru (Ayase Haruka) and her boss Takano (Fujiki Naohito) have been happily married for two years. However, their hectic careers and Hotaru's laziness have made it impossible for them to go on their honeymoon. When Hotaru discovers that Takano's dream is to take a trip to Italy with his wife, she reluctantly agrees to go on a Roman holiday. At first, the trip is far from smooth, as Hotaru hates traveling and would rather stay at home. However, Hotaru then meets career woman Rio (Matsuyuki Yasuko) and realizes that there is more to life than her own priorities. At this moment, Takano is suddenly kidnapped, and Hotaru will use any means necessary to get her husband back.

A romantic delight Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Being unfamiliar with either the manga or TV series which preceded it, the opening scenes of the film "Hotaru" were bewildering to me. Why was this young woman behaving in this peculiar manner? What was the relationship between her and this straight-laced man? The film assumes familiarity with these people. Fortunately, it doesn't take long to figure things out.

Since their marriage, Hotaru (Ayase Haruka), when she's not working, loves to veg out at home in the company of her beloved hubby and boss Takano (Fujiki Naohito). Takano longs for a romantic honeymoon with his bride in Italy. Hotaru grudgingly agrees to the trip, but their work makes it impossible. One day Hotaru is stunned to find Takano packing his bags to travel alone to Rome. It turns out that he must take a business trip there. Hotaru decides to accompany him. Upon arrival in Rome, they meet Rio (Matsuyuki Yasuko), a Japanese woman who, like Hotaru, prefers to remain at the hotel. Unbeknownst to Hotaru and Takano, Rio is not simply lazy; there is a more significant explanation for her indolence. Takano mysteriously is delayed after he attends a business meeting. Hotaru believes that he has been kidnapped by the mafia. She and Rio set out in search of him, a search which becomes a life-changing journey for both of them.

"Hotaru" proves to be a delightful 'Roman holiday', with Ayase Haruka charming in another of her patented child-woman roles. Matsuyuki Yasuko brilliantly brings her haunted character to life. Fujiki Naohito delivers mature male magnetism. Tegoshi Yuya, as Rio's younger brother, is the cast's inexpressive weak link, fortunately in a small role.

Final note: In a quiet moment, Hotaru says, "No matter who you are or what kind of life you live, there's a moment when a light shines in your life... It's a light that never fades. Once it lights up your heart, you should never let it fade away." Hubby Takano replies, "And that light leads to the meaning in life." So true. Alas, they were not speaking of "that true light, who gives light to everyone (John 1:9)", Jesus Christ, the true light who freely gives meaning to life. All other lights are 'hotaru' (fireflies).
