I've seen this movie years ago and decided to give a review now.
As many reviewers have mentioned before me., this movie is visual feast for those looking for Zhang Yimou's trademark of capturing outdoor scenery like a colour palette. Many outdoor locations were stunning and in particular the scene where Takeshi & ZZY were pursued by the guards in the bamboo forest and the open fields where they bade farewell. The precise landing of those bamboo shafts combined with sound effects keeps you on the edge and have become one of the trademark scene in many a tongue-in-cheek situations. I was surprised with the choice of Andy Lau in this movie cause he doesn't really speak mandarin that well. A good performance from Takeshi and ZZYi showed her fluidity of motion & dance in the opening sequence. She came across as the ice maiden here partially because her character calls for it. Halfway through the movie one can already assume the ending, i.e. with no one gaining anything in a love triangle situation where jealousy & the feeling of betrayal by a loved one is more than enough to create a green-eyed monster. Only shortcoming, which I find has become a habit of some of Hong Kong & Mainland best directors, is to throw in a few minutes of sexual romp in a bid to stir the audience. I think they've forgotten that in period dramas, subtlety is best and in this case, it was awkward. Should have been done differently. Still, it's one of those new=age creations to come out of Asia capturing a whole new generation of western audience. |

This movie seemed all-over-the-place to me, but yet I enjoyed it regardless. Some of the acting was pretty bad in parts but the visuals were beautiful and interesting. Once I started watching it, for some reason, I was drawn into the complicated storyline and characters. Zhang Ziyi is a very simple and plain-looking girl but is a pretty good actress some of the time. The ending is beautiful but sad in its way. While I do find this movie often forgettable compared to better Chinese action/romances, it didn't give me that "i can't believe i wasted 2 hours of my life on this!" feeling. I thought the sexual parts brought down the quality of the movie not to mention they were kind of funny and odd!! O.o Anyyyyyyyyywaaay! It's a fair movie, but nothing I'd watch more than 2 times or recommend to someone looking for a good Asian film. O.O nuh-uh. |

Visual Poetry
This is my favourite film in the world. Yes, ive read that some people think the story is weak, that the ending is melodramatic etc, etc. I couldnt care less. This film will fill up your senses with its beautiful use of colour (the costumes, sets and out-door scenery is the best my eyes have ever experienced on film), music (the soundtrack is superb) and the particularly spectacular action scenes. This film to me is visual poetry...I went through every emotion possible with this drama and have watched it time and time again and still feel the same about it. Yi Mou Zhang is a genius as far as I am concerned. I cannot wait for his next offering. The lead actors are gorgeous and credible and if film is there to make you really FEEL, feel I most certainly did. |

The movie was visual and gorgeous...but the story line was awful. It was far too predictable, you could tell what was going to happen, and who was going to kill who. I also felt that falling in love in three days is laughably fake. It took a lot away from the believeability of the film, and added a callow, childish element to it. I did like the scenes and outfits of the movie too, though. The movie could have been much better. Also, the kissing scenes were pretty bad. It looks like it was agonizing for them to kiss each other! If its that bad, dont do it! |
