With Ice Poison, Burmese-born Midi Z firmly establishes himself as one of Taiwan's leading independent filmmakers. The drama has earned the director awards at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and Sweden's Peace and Love Film Festival, as well as a Best Director title at the Taipei Film Awards. The lauded film is also Taiwan's entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2015 Academy Awards.

With his livelihood threatened by industrial agriculture, an old farmer decides to sell his cow for a motorcycle for his son, hoping that he can make a better living as a driver in the city. Unfortunately, work proves to be elusive in the big city, and the young man quickly finds himself floundering – until he meets Sanmei. A native of Burma, Sanmei has recently returned from China to bury her grandfather. She hopes to make enough money to re-settle in her home country with her son and escape an engagement to an old Chinese man. Recognizing their mutual need for cash, Sanmei proposes to the young man that they work for her cousin, who deals in the trade of a drug called ice poison.
