Theater director Toda Akihiro adapts his award-winning stage play Kawanabe Ichiko no Tame ni into the feature film Ichiko. Portraying the title character in a riveting Japan Academy Prize-nominated performance, Sugisaki Hana embodies the sad and tragic life of an enigmatic woman defined by circumstances beyond her control.
Kawabe Ichiko (Sugisaki Hana) suddenly disappears the day after being proposed to by her boyfriend Hasegawa Yoshinori (Wakaba Ryuya). Goto (Uno Shohei), a detective searching for Ichiko, pays a visit to Hasegawa, who is at a loss. Goto shows Hasegawa a photo of Ichiko and asks "Who is this woman?" Hasegawa tries to trace Ichiko's whereabouts through people who had connections with her, including old friends and classmates. He learns that Ichiko used to go by a different name and gradually uncovers the truth about her brutal past.

本当の川辺市子を誰も知らない―― 抗えない境遇が狂わせた、切なくも壮絶な彼女の人生。杉咲花が日本アカデミー賞優秀主演女優賞を受賞した衝撃作! 原作は、監督の戸田彬弘が主宰する劇団チーズtheater旗揚げ公演作品でもあり、サンモールスタジオ選定賞2015では最優秀脚本賞を受賞した舞台『川辺市子のために』。観客から熱い支持を受け2度再演された人気の舞台を自ら映画化した。――川辺市子 (杉咲花) は、3年間一緒に暮らしてきた恋人の長谷川義則 (若葉竜也) からプロポーズを受けた翌日に、突然失踪。途方に暮れる長谷川の元に訪れたのは、市子を捜しているという刑事・後藤 (宇野祥平)。後藤は、長谷川の目の前に市子の写真を差し出し「この女性は誰なのでしょうか」と尋ねる。市子の行方を追って、昔の友人や幼馴染、高校時代の同級生・・・と、これまで彼女と関わりがあった人々から証言を得ていく長谷川は、かつての市子が違う名前を名乗っていたことを知る。そんな中、長谷川は部屋で一枚の写真を発見し、その裏に書かれた住所を訪ねることに。捜索を続けるうちに長谷川は、彼女が生きてきた壮絶な過去と真実を知ることになる。
