YesAsia Editorial Description

What would you be willing to erase from the world in order to live another day?

Satoh Takeru stars in the film adaptation of the novel If Cats Disappeared from the World (a.k.a. Sekai kara Neko ga Kieta nara) by Kawamura Genki. Directed by Nagai Akira (Judge!), the film brilliantly blends fantasy and human drama to capture the emotional world of a young man coming to terms with life and death. Miyazaki Aoi co-stars as his first love while Okuda Eiji and Harada Mieko play his parents.

Satoh Takeru plays a postman who lives a quiet and solitary life with his cat. Every day, he goes to work as usual and when he returns home, he watches a movie selected by his friend. Then one day, he collapses and the doctor informs him of his impending death. That night, he meets the devil who looks exactly like him. The two strike up a deal: the postman's life will be extended one day for every one thing that disappears from the world. But with each thing that disappears – phones, movies, clocks – his past and present will change dramatically and his life will be gradually robbed of all that he holds dear.

If Movies Disappeared from the World
I'm a simple person: I see cat, I watch. Nagai Akira's If Cats Disappeared from the World, however, is not about cats. Cute kitties – named Cabbage and Lettuce – do appear in the film, but the hypothetical scenario presented in the title serves to broach the not-so-cute topic of death and to reflect on the value of life.

Based on Kawamura Genki's best-selling novel, the film gets into the mind of a mild-mannered postman suddenly confronted with news of his impending death. Save for the fact that he's played by Satoh Takeru, the protagonist is a remarkably common and relatable figure, an alone but not necessarily lonely young postman who quietly goes about his work, feeds his cat, watches a movie and calls it a day. After he's suddenly diagnosed with a brain tumor that could kill him at any moment, he strikes a deal with the devil who appears to him as a doppelganger of himself. His life will be extended one day for every one thing that disappears from the world, as if it had never existed.

Taking away one thing, however, can change many things in the past and present. Without the phone, he would have never met the ex-girlfriend (Miyazaki Aoi) with whom he shares many experiences, both happy and painful. Without movies, he would have never befriended the classmate (Hamada Gaku) who now selects a movie for him every day. Each disappearing item awakens his memories of the people and moments that shaped his life. Owing to the protagonist's muted personality, many of the memories may seem restrained and regretful, but he and the audience will soon understand that what would be truly regretful is if those memories never existed.

When objects disappear from the world, they do so in a sudden and spectacular whirl in which the universe cruelly realigns itself in front of the protagonist's eyes. Storefronts collapse and transform, memories fade and reform, and friends become strangers in the blink of an eye. The fantasy elements and eye-popping effects are impeccably integrated into the sentimental human drama, injecting urgency and tension into the subdued hero's soul-searching journey. Though If Cats Disappeared still falls into the formula of obviously earmarking its emotional moments, most of the film does an admirable job of gently marrying the mundane, the magical and the grave weight of life and death.

Somewhat unexpectedly, If Cats Disappeared from the World is a film for film buffs. Movies connect the protagonist to his best friend and girlfriend, and references to Fritz Lang's Metropolis and Wong Kar Wai's Happy Together bookmark the beginning and end of a romance. At one point, he wonders how many more movies he'll be able to watch before he dies. That hits home.
