YesAsia Editorial Description

This collection presents all three films in the blockbuster Hong Kong trilogy that inspired Martin Scorsese's Hollywood remake, The Departed. The original Infernal Affairs (2002) follows the parallel lives of a cop (Tony Leung Chiu Wai) working undercover as a mobster and a mobster (Andy Lau) who has infiltrated the police force. Infernal Affairs II (2003) offers a prequel, while Infernal Affairs III (2003) ties up loose ends. All three films are both commercially and critically acclaimed for eschewing over-the-top action in favor of a stylized and subdued storyline that builds on emotional and psychological tension.

Tony Leung, Andy Lau, Anthony Wong, Eric Tsang, Shawn Yue, Edison Chen, Leon Lai, Francis Ng, Kelly Chen, Carina Lau, and Chen Daoming are all among the trilogy's fantastic all-star cast. Now you can finally fully immerse yourself in the world of undercover moles Yan (Tony Leung) and Ming (Andy Lau). Discover the full cinematic impact of this unbelievable box-office breaking Hong Kong cop versus crook saga that has made its place in Hong Kong movie history!

This 4-disc edition comes with a bonus disc of special features.

Professional Review of "Infernal Affairs Trilogy (4K Ultra HD + Bonus Blu-ray) (20th Anniversary Edition) (New Version) (Hong Kong Version)"

May 5, 2010

This professional review refers to Infernal Affairs I,II,III
Andrew Lau, director/cinematographer of this film, has previously brought us such classics as the Young And Dangerous series, and the special effects fest Storm Riders. However, he should also be held responsible for films such as the confusing Bullets Of Love (which I can't help thinking of as "Bullets Urve Lurrrrve") and the utterly tosspottish Wesley's Mysterious File, in which the only mystery was how such a respectable cast were persuaded to show their faces in such drivel.

So "highly variable" would be one way of referring to this director: when he gets it right, he gets it right in an earth-shattering, multiple-orgasming kind of way, and when he gets it wrong, he gets it so wrong that you wish a tidal wave would sweep over the planet to remove the evidence. Fortunately for the cinema-going public, Infernal Affairs belongs to the former category: everyone from critics to audiences to people off the street are raving about this film. It should come as no surprise that two sequels are expected to be completed later this year.

The plot is simple: a cop undercover in the triads crosses paths with a triad undercover in the cops. The two main characters, played with consummate skill by Tony Leung Chiu Wai (as the former) and Andy Lau Tak Wah (as the latter), navigate the difficulties of their respective roles like soldiers crossing a minefield. The tension inherent in constantly living a double life, and indeed a double life that has a high risk of sudden violent death, fairly leaps off the screen. Both actors were nominated for the Best Actor award in the 22nd Hong Kong Film Awards, with Tony Leung taking the statue, one of six that Infernal Affairs scored.

The supporting cast without exception was superb. Eric Tsang and Anthony Wong, as the triad boss and police boss respectively, inhabited their roles with verve and passion, which we've come to expect from Tsang at least. Wong, known in recent years for sleepwalking through roles he feels unexcited about, had a bumper year in 2002, with three nominations for the Best Supporting Actor in the HKFA. He eventually won for this role, away from Infernal Affairs cast-mates Eric Tsang and Chapman To.

I must say that even Edison Chen, someone I've always had a strong aversion to, did well in his albeit small role. In fact, amongst the whole cast, there wasn't a single wrong note or lacklustre performance from anyone. Sammi Cheng shone as a dramatic character, while Kelly Chen, although less than credible as a psychiatrist, at least comported herself with some professionalism and refrained from creating a spectacle (as she did in Lavender, for example).

So overall, an interesting story made exceptional by the performances of the whole cast.

Perfection Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
One of my favourite sagas in cinematic history! "The Departed" simply cannot compare. Don't bother watching if you're after a blood bath. This isn't an action flick. But nor is it another whine about how hard life is in the triads/police. Of course, if we were to boil it down, it's a "spy vs spy" plot. Why it works so well, is the emphasis on character development rather than strictly plot twists. This isn't a story that's out to surprise you with a switch at the last minute. Rather it's the heart wrenching realisation that you can almost see it coming. You can feel for each of the characters with every decision they make and direction they take. Of course, you have your cliche triad movie themes: family, honour, duty and sacrifice. But it does well in exploring how each character deals with the pressure. Do they rise above it? Or are the haunted by it? Do they give up? Or are they corrupted by it? Probably my favourite character development is Eric Tsang's character from the first to the second movie. His was a perfect example of how this life can twist a man. That said, my gripe with this trilogy are the bluray contents. I wanted to upgrade my collection, but it has less special features and inclusions than the local region 4 DVD version I already own. But if you're not concerned with extras, then buy away!

Infernal Affairs Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This in no slam-bang bloody action film but an excellent examination of four characters caught up in their own Inferno. This film haunts; it stands up over time -- viewing a year or so later is just as powerful as the first time. If you want slash and burn, avoid this trilogy -- if you want strong performances abd excellent characterizations hung upon a stong plot, this is one you will not want to miss!

Great Movie Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Infernal Affairs is one of HK cinema's most impressive movies...
It is a very intricate and clever film. The story is captivating, the actors are brilliant, the music is haunting and there are even some humourous moments too! The trilogy is great because you can watch it and link the story together as it unfolds.
I would definitely highly recommend this movie to anyone!

ok film, too hyped up Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
After all the hoo ha about Internal Affairs I bought the dvd to see what it was all about. Very disappointed!! It was dead slow to start and when it got started, it ended!! Theres was hardly any action just a load of repetative 'life-is-hard' talk.

To me it seems the producer/makers of the film just got a loada VERY well known actors (whom I'm sure some of us are sick of seeing all the time) who are in almost every hong kong film produced in the last 2/3 decades.

This is a very 'A' typical HK movie - good looking actors, well known people, good vs evil etc. Where are the new talents?? C'mon how original?!
