YesAsia Editorial Description
One of the best period kung-fu actioners Hong Kong has to offer, Iron Monkey is produced by Tsui Hark and helmed by renowned filmmaker and action director Yuen Woo Ping (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). Action greats Donnie Yen (SPL) and Yu Rong Guang (My Father is a Hero) team up and face off in blistering martial arts set pieces. Set in the late 19th-century Canton folklore era of patriotic heroes, evil oppressors, and chest-thumping righteous action, Iron Monkey revolves around the heroic struggles of a patriotic vigilante, folk hero Wong Kei Ying, and his even more famous son Wong Fei Hung, here still an adolescent and played by actress Angie Tsang.
Soft-spoken doctor by day, vigilante Iron Monkey by night, physician Yang (Yu Rong Guang) has the local Qing government up in arms with his Robin Hood-like heroic exploits against the town's corrupt overlords. With the authorities randomly dragging people off the streets on fabricated suspicions, Wong Kei Ying (Donnie Yen) and his son Fei Hung (Angie Tsang), who just rolled into town, are quickly arrested when they display their martial arts prowess. The unscrupulous magistrate holds Fei Hung hostage, and orders Wong Kei Ying to capture Iron Monkey in exchange for his son.

Average....plus a bit++
This movie was released ages ago and my dvd is at least 10years old. An above average actioner with a couple of comedy scenes thrown in. The adolescent Wong Fei Hung was actually played by a girl, Angie Tsang. She was spotted at one of China's Martial Arts Competition and signed up for this movie. Also an early involvement of Donnie in kungfu movies cause I suspect he also did the second Once upon a time inChina ( Part 2) after this or vice versa. As mentioned by other reviewers, this is only an average actioner by Hong Kong standards and mine. However, for westerners, if this is your first exposure, then naturally, you'll find it amazing. By the same token, the "wire-fu" by Yuen Woo Ping standard and Donnie were good but so obvious. There are a few more movies out there covering Wong Fei Hung's younger days often with a much older Wong Kei Ying thrown in . Examples are Jackie's Drunken Master Part 2 (father was Ti Lung), Gordon Liu's Challenge of the Masters (showing early training days with Lok Ah Choi, his father's sifu played by the legendary Chen Kuan Tai) and Martial Club. If you think the action was good with this movie, the aforementioned 3 will have you going gaga.
A good actioner to start your collection. |

GREAT CLASSIC
This is an excellent old style kungfu classic without any camera tricks or wire work that one gets to see
in so many of the modern kungfu movies. Its a simple story of Ming Loyalists in 18th Century China fighting against the Manchurian oppressors but features authentic Northern Monkey fist and Eagle Claw boxing. The fight choreography is very good and the actors who star in this film who are likely not remembered now but known to all diehard classic kungfu movie fans were at the time martial arts practitioners. The training scenes are pretty good and the fights that follow when Iron Monkey goes on a rampage against those responsible for his family's demise are GREAT! Of course, all this climaxes in an amazing showdown between our Monkey boxer and the Manchurian General who is a master of the Northern Eagle Claw system. What follows is an impressive exchange of kungfu techniques that will keep all diehard classic kungfu fans glued to the screen. My only disappointment with this dvd is that it only has English audio and the dubbing is atrocious. This dvd was previously advertised as having chinese audio but I am glad to see that Yesasia has now amended their product features listing- otherwise it would be misleading info for other diehard classic kungfu movie fans like myself. I sincerely hope that a Cantonese or Chinese print of this excellent classic will be released by Yesasia in the near future. Finally, please do not mistake this Iron Monkey version with the Yuen Wo Ping 1993 version starring Donnie Yen and Yu Rong Kwong. The dvd advertised here is the 1975 classic and not the 1993 version which has no relation to the classic. For example, the 1993 version is really about the young Wong Fei Hung and his dad Wong Kei Ying and the story line and characters bear no relation to the characters of this 1975 classic! As such Yesasia, having amended their website to reflect the correct product feature ie no Chinese audio but English audio feature ONLY- Yesasia should also remove most if not all the other reviews listed prior to my review. This is because those reviews are all about the Yuen Wo Ping 1993 Iron Monkey version starring Donnie Yen and are NOT reviews about this Iron Monkey 1975 classic movie advertised above. |

I have a Taiseng release of this DVD which predates the US release & has a more original looking cover to it. This is definately a classic one & I wish Tsui Hark would have made more like this. Donnie Yen & Yu Rong Gwong are awesome to watch. Unfortunate there are speeded up fight scenes but it doesn't take away from the beauty of the postures the martial artists have to offer. Excellent story from start to finish giving appropriate pacing & time to bond with practically every character. |

A Masterpiece!
Some people tend to look upon Iron Monkey as just a prequel to Once Upon a Time in China, but it's a classic all it's own. Quentin Tarantino released this film in the U.S. (with a great new soundtrack!), which is available on the Region 1 DVD by Miramax. The action choreography and masterful direction by Yuen Woo-Ping is what makes this film unbeatable, Woo-Ping made this film alot less serious than the counterparts starring Jet Li, nonetheless it holds it's own and is always in any Kung Fu fans top ten. Donnie Yen gives this film such a speed and authenticity to his fights, it's amazing!
Yu Rongguang who plays the iron monkey is also a talented martial artist who isn't as well known, but probably the most amazing performance is by Sze-Man Tsang who plays the young Wong Fei Hung and in reality is a female award winning martial artist! The great direction of Yuen Woo-Ping combinded with the HK talent makes for one of the greatest martial arts films of them all! |
