YesAsia Editorial Description

After releasing her first mini album Lost and Found in September last year, promising female newcomer IU further proved her talents as a guest artist in top R&B singer Wheesung's nationwide tour. On Growing Up, she unveils a broader music spectrum beginning with the on-air track Boo. The modern uptempo song is inspired by an 80s sound; combined with IU's attractive dance moves, it just may stir up a new dance boom. IU's album is also marked by a variety of other songs and genres including the reggae track "Looking" (Track 1), the blues ballads "Pitiful" (Track 3) and "Ugly Duckling" (Track 11), and the modern dance rock number A Dreamer.

Korea's little sister Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
-This review is written with the power of hindsight-

After debuting in 2008 with 'Lost and Found', IU returns the following year with the much cheerier 'Growing Up'. She really pulls out the weight with this album, throwing in much of her debut album while adding a host of new songs and remakes as well. If one song isn't to your liking, there are plenty others to go around, though if you're an IU fan I think you'll like much of it.

This album packs so many songs, you really should preview a couple. Notable ones include "Boo" and "Hey (rock ver.)", which IU performed live. It's also my favorite and something which IU really hasn't done again afterwards - she's stuck to her own pop style for the rest of her career up to today. Many of her songs are of the IU the kid style - she still hasn't grown up completely like in the 2010 hit "Good Day" - but the songs are fun and pleasing.

Unlike her debut album, 'Growing Up' is much brighter literally - white and yellow abound on the packaging, and the pictures are some of the cutest IU images you will get (she goes from cute to pretty later in "Good Day").

If I'm not mistaken, it's the biggest album IU's released so far, even though a couple songs are from the debut album. It's a nice listen and a good sampling of IU if you want to hear her voice before her 2010 breakout.

Just as I feared... -___- Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
IU is an AMAZING vocalist. Her first single Mia (Missing Child) really showed off her vocal ability and I waited in high anticipation for her album... however, this album is a COMPLETE 360 from her original concept!

If I hadn't heard Mia, I would been used to this style of music with her voice, but the fact is that Mia was an EXCELLENT start for IU. However, it gave listeners a misinterpretation of what to expect from her in the future.

It's to the point where Mia sounds out of place on the album.

The single 'Boo' did nothing for me. The only tracks I felt had nice potentials were Track 1 'Bala Bogi' and Track 8 'Ijanha'.

It feels like Loen Entertainment thought IU wouldn't gain young fans with ballads and decided to try to fit her voice into the mainstream k-pop. Though it may be true that she may have only gained mostly older fans with her ballads, she had the potential of being a 'singing' artist rather just another mainstream artist.

This album is low rated, not because of IU's singing skills, but for the songs themselves. IU has true talent and this album isn't allowing it to bloom. I recommend just buying her first single.

Truly Brilliant.... Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
IU has to be one of the most talented teen artist ever. Her vocal ability, musicality and general understanding of the songs are way beyond her age of 16 years old. I would even rate her as one of the best female vocals among all korean musicians. I first did not much care about her title 'Boo', but now I think about it, she is only 16 and should be singing this kind of the songs anyway. All of the songs in her first album are above average to excellent. Various styles of music are included in her first album such as beautiful ballads, some cute K-pop dance songs, Reggae style songs and even a rock style song. Again her versatile vocal works are impressive. I am a new fan of IU.
