Xiao Zhan, the breakout star of the hit series The Untamed, takes his first film leading role in Jade Dynasty. Best known for the A Chinese Ghost Story and Swordsman series, Hong Kong director Ching Siu Tung returns to period fantasy and action genres with this xianxia feature based on Xiao Ding's best-selling novel Zhu Xian, which also inspired the TV drama Noble Aspirations. Besides Xiao Zhan, the film's cast includes trending stars Li Qin (The Captain), Tang Yixin (The Golden Era) and Meng Meiqi of Rocket Girls, as well as Hong Kong veterans John Chiang and Cecilia Yip.

As a child, Zhang Xiaofan (Xiao Zhan) was taken in by the Qingyunmen sect after his village was massacred by mysterious forces. Despite training in the Taoist arts for many years, the earnest youth has made little advancement and always comes in last among his fellow disciples. Through a twist of fate, he learns a special martial art and acquires a mystical weapon, vaulting him up the power rankings and into dangerous duels. Along the way, he begins to uncover the secrets behind his identity and the evil that destroyed his village.
