June 23, 2012 Old Treasure DiscoveredI came across this on a couple of weeks ago and it was a light hearted movie. Nicky shows his athletic strength in pushups, etc and I love the 'sarcastic ' tonge-in-cheek dialogue/ remarks passed between Captain Nicky and the platoon. So much fun. I love it. May 2, 2012 Burnt outI bought this because of Nicky Wu even though he had only about 60% screen time compared to Takeshi. Both of them were young in this movie but both did farely good. The fighting scenes in the jail were realistic but not overly cruel. Anthony Wong has the face to be the corrupted 'Jail Commissioner" . I particularly like Nicky's boxing scenes. May 2, 2012 Dream ShatteredAll the songs were nice but my favourite was the last track My Summer Dream. As to be expected since the songs and video clips were released years before 2002, the way they were 'directed' were not much to sing about but at least Nicky was in them. However, I was looking forward to the last track where Nicky was at the beach singing My Summer Dream. Unfortunately, they had a couple trying to be romantic and it's NOT the original video clip. May 2, 2012 Lost TreasureI'm a new fan of Nicky Wu after BBJX. This series is only available on vcd and I've no choice but buy it cause being an old series, I don't think it's available anywhere else. It's expensive but after watching it over 3 nights, it's worth it.
Vicky and Nicky really click. The story is filled with romantic comedy, suspense, betrayal, loyalty and lastly love is the biggest winner. The scenes where Nic and Vicky spent their time together away from everyone was the most romantic. Being an athelete, Nic's prowess in those kungfu sequences were excellent even with those wireworks, they were fantastic.

March 19, 2012 Love it step by stepFrom my first review in Oct, 2011 till now, I've already rewatched this 4 times. :))
If you're looking for kungfu action, this is not it. Or if you wish to compare this to Palace Lockhart (Gong Part 1 with Yang Mi, Mickey He and William Feng) there is definitely differences. (2)Our Price: US$12.99Related promotions:March 7, 2012 They're All HeroesFor those who saw this movie and thought it was senseless, let me clarify that one has to understand the underlying (i.e. read in-between the lines) joke and must have grown up watching old chinese kungfu movies in order to really get the laughs. So many 'topics' are thrown in , example , a pair of flying boot, flying carpet, homosexuality (Carina Lau and Kenny Bee) but with good fun, Tony Leung Kar Fai (aka Big Tony) who doubled himself as the disciple wanting to be an angel and his own sifu (both of whom spoke English). That left us with Leslie and Joey Wong who played lovers (until Leslie set eyes on Brigitte Lin, the princess). Then Jacky Cheung came along (he's Joey's cousin) and fell in love with her at first sight.
To confuse the viewers, Tony Leung Chiu Wai ( aka Little Tony) and his lover spoke Taiwan Teochew in the opening scene while Maggie Cheung spoke cantonese with ending pause in her sentences . The songs sang by Leslie Cheung and Big Tony are classic cantonese tunes but adapted with new lyrics. That single scene of Big Tony dressed as a female with that ridiculous hairdo is enough to gag you. Even Jacky Cheung throw in a number. Surely it's impossible to contain yourself with Little Tony's swollen lips which 'looked like a pair of sausages'.
Final word: I think cantonese speaking viewers get the best laugh out of this movie.

(1)Our Price: US$23.99Related promotions:March 4, 2012 Eye OpenerI love TVB series and have not heard of Hong Kong's Hawick Lau until this, my first mainland series. and starred Hongkong's Hawick Lau and I was absolutely absorbed. Not only is he suave, handsome and romantic but he is capable of playing modern and period roles.
The story is about a well-to-do family running a wine business. With 2 sons in the family, Hawick (the elder and expected to take over the family business) and younger brother who was in the army. When Hawick was match-make to marry Yao Qian Yu, the family did not know that Yao was secretly dating the younger son. They promised to get married after he has established himself in the army. But after a couple of years and no word of return, she eventually agreed to the match-making as she could not reveal this relationship (since it's a taboo for unmarried young girls to establish relationshps with the opposite sex).
However, all hell break loose when the younger brother returns for the wedding, Yao realising her ex-boyfriend is now her brother-in-law and their previous secret relatiionship was exposed . With this taboo hanging over her head, she was accused of being a 'loose' woman and needed to be punished according to the old tradition. Hawick do like her and tried to overlook this matter and hope to eventually win her affection. With many trials /tribulations in their marriage and tragedies in the business, both parties were put to the test but eventually found each other in the end.
There are many old chinese traditions which singles and married couples (especially the women) had to observe. In this story, the audience is exposed to them and will definitely query some of the unreasonable cause for punishment.
Excellent heart wrenching scenes throughout and this show has made Hawick one of my favourite . I love the theme song.Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

March 4, 2012 Piggy TailWhat an unexpected find as it rings of Jet Li's Once Upon A Time in China trilogy.
A young Wu Jing (which I've just discovered is Jacky cause he rarely uses his christian name) displayed fine forms and agility in his martial arts prowess. The formidable 'piggy tail' stance added extra comedy to the show and is well incorporated to make you wonder if it's really possible. Fight choreography was great from Yuen Woo Ping.

January 19, 2012 Unsung HeroesI've enjoyed Crystal Huang's performances in many mainland tv series (starring with Hawick Lau) and of course I can't miss out on Kevin Cheng being cast as her husband.
A bit of a tear jerker, be prepared with tissues. Crystal did well with action choreography, Dennis To showing another side of his talent besides contributing some kickass action.

The first few chapters were a little slow but Cao Cao and Liu Bei early confrontation is shown here and it must be followed closely. Things get interesting when Liu Bei meets up with Kwan Yu and Chang Fei , later his sworn brothers and of course Zhuge Liang. There were many battle scenes, some small plots as to how a few of them met their wives, etc, battle of the wits between Cao Cao and the endless sacrifice and death of the strongest generals under Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang's direction.

I do not know how close the script is to the book but I enjoy all the important details as to step=by-step victory/defeat in the different battles fought between Cao Cao and Liu Bei over a spand of more than 20 years. More interestingly is the level of friendship/mateship/loyalty/sacrifice and love between Liu Bei, Zhang Yu, Zhang Fei, and later on Zhuge Liang., a taste of Cao Cao's hunger for power and towards the end, watch how a touch of nature denied the ultimate victory to Zhuge Liang.

January 11, 2012 Bubble busted *I was so looking forward to this movie especially when the casting include all-time fave veteran kungfu girl Kara Hui and my one-armed swordsman, Jimmy Wang Yu. My girl still has got what it takes and I sincerely hope she'll be given better supportive roles with full screen time for kungfu action. Having said that her time here was less than 15minutes . My joy was short lived.
The idea of injecting "CSI-style" investigative procedures by Takeshi and those computer graphics to emphasise each deadly blow didnt go well with me. I find his Sichuanese dialogue plus commentary a little annoying and Tang Wei's mono tone dialogue delivery really uninteresting. Thank heavens for chinese subtitles. Action choreography was 7 out of 10. Donnie chopped off his left arm (supposedly a clan rite to 'resign' membership) in a bit to pay homage to the original one-armed swordsman. Too cliche (shouldn't copy Taratino's tribute to Shaw greats).

October 25, 2011 FantasticI was initially apprehensive about this series after watching the much succesful "Gong I" earlier (based on the same fantasy/history) which starred Feng Shao Feng and Yang Mi. I have yet to watch "Gong II". I love Kevin Cheng and I knew I had to watch it.
Congrats to Lee Kwok Lap for this gathering of promising stars. Everyone shine in their roles and I thought the casting was spot on. However particular mention to Kevin (8th Prince) , Yuan Hong (13th Prince) Nicky Wu (4th Prince) and Lin Gengxin (14th Prince). To get the most out of this series and reasons for all the heart-tugging and suspense, initial attention must be paid to the reasons behind sibling rivalry. While the original had some 'silly' fighting sequences, they blended so well into the movie , no one was complaining. This remake has so many wireworks/"wirefu" and cgi, I find it so tiring.
However, the good part is legendary kungfu girl Kara Hui has resurfaced. Pity she wasn't given any real fighting sequences but she played the 'tree spirit' wonderfully.
Be it tribute or not to beloved Leslie Cheung ( who sang the original theme song ), the mandarin version was played during the end-credit. Personally speaking, the producers should have written another song for this remake.Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

June 19, 2011 DisappointingI was looking forward to this movie to see Sammo and Yuen Wah giving us an eyeful of action. But that is not to be. Sammo's total screen time only about 10 minutes and Yuen Wah, a little better ( but real action time of a little choy ley fatt = less than 5 minutes). The idea for this show was good to start off but unfortunately, got sidetracked to those boxing tournament. A letdown for the movie but great to see Sammo and Yuen Wah still looking great. June 19, 2011 Not up to scratchHaving watched mainland production of Three Kingdom (astonishing 94 chapters from start to finish of the complete classic novel), I find this movie, like Red Cliff, to be lacking real substance. Then why am I here again? Well, I couldn't help myself and bought the digitally remastered version. They've done a good job, pictures were clearer and thank goodness, original voices. This is important to me cause with these remastered versions (as I've discovered with a few), they replace certain actor's voice (I've a few done for Jackie, Yuen Biao, Sammo, etc). May 23, 2011 Violent But RealI've watched this movie at least 4 times in the last couple of years and still came to the same conclusion. It's extremely violent and the gore was not to my taste (especially with Wu Jing's robotic mission of 'kill kill kill'). But having said that it is also a reality and things like these do happen.

May 23, 2011 Me TooAnother winning formula for Eric Tsang, exposures for tvb stars (perfect casting for Bosco/Wong Cho Lam combo) and Louis Yuen in drags , Evergreen Mak & the boys like "Men In Black", Aarif Lee (who could pass off as Wang Lee Hom's younger brother), Sandra Ng/Anita & Tony with fantastic chemistry really got me in stitches. Only complaint is Eric talked too fast. I like the message of the need for a close=knit community and reality issues facing many low income earners trying to make ends meet (best said by Aarif Lee when he tried to help Wu Ma get away during one of the local sweep for unlicensed vendors).
I love this sort of feel-good shows whereby hopefully it'll strike a note with the now generation who are quite materialistic & "technology controlled" (note the list of complaints by Tony's children when they had to move in with grandpa).
But what I really like with movies like this (and award-winning Gallant), the casting of good veteran actors like Wu Ma (still ageless) and Stanley. Better than 72 Tenants.Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This)
