生於上海。12歲考入成都軍區，開始為期八年的舞蹈生涯，這段期間她逐漸發現自己對文學創作的喜愛。1986年發表第一部長篇小說。之後赴美留學。1990年開始在臺灣報刊發表小說。1992年以獲中央日報文學獎的〈少女小漁〉引起文壇和電影界重視。1993至1998年，連續獲得臺灣多項文學大獎。作品被翻譯成英、法、荷、日等多國文字。近年來，開始嘗試直接以英文創作，2006年出版第一本英文小說The Banquet Bug（中譯書名《赴宴者》）。她的作品充滿鮮活的生命力，具有強烈的故事性、畫面性，和鮮明的人物形象。著有《小姨多鶴》、《赴宴者》、《穗子物語》、《倒淌河》、《誰家有女初養成》、《草鞋權貴》、《少女小漁》、《第九個寡婦》等。
