Sabu's first feature since 2005's Dead Run, Kanikosen (a.k.a. The Crab Cannery Ship) is based on Kobayashi Takiji's famed 1929 proletarian tome about a group of sea laborers rebelling against their fascist boss. The classic novel saw a huge surge in sales and popularity in Japan in 2008, prompting this 2009 silver-screen adaptation. Kanikosen was previously adapted in 1953 by Yamamura So but Sabu - being Sabu - brings a completely new edge to the rousing underdog tale of leftist heroism. The revolution plays out on theater-inspired location sets in a flurry of contemporary and Marxist language, with the brutality and misery balanced by the fast, sly humor and zany sequence of events that Sabu's films are known for.

Matsuda Ryuhei (Nightmare Detective) plays Shinji, one of many workers wretchedly toiling their almost comically Dickensian lives away on a crab cannery ship during Imperialist Japan. Abuse is reaped upon them day in and day out by their brutal supervisor Arakawa (Nishijima Hidetoshi, Vacation) who would gladly work his men to death to increase output. Shinji jumps ship and gets rescued by a Russian ship where he discovers a proletarian paradise. Shinji returns to his ship to lead the masses in revolt against Arakawa.
