YesAsia Editorial Description

After chronicling the roaring age of Busan gangsters in Nameless Gangster, director Yoon Jong Bin goes back even further in time to another turbulent era when outlaws ran rampant. Set in the 19th century during the waning years of the Joseon dynasty, Kundo: Age of the Rampant rolls out a kimchi western revenge saga packed with rollicking action and memorable one-liners delivered with stylistic flare. Kang Dong Won (Haunters) makes his post-army comeback in the role of the cruel villain, while Ha Jung Woo, in his fourth collaboration with director Yoon, acts up a charismatic storm as a cleaver-wielding butcher-turned-vigilante. A top-notch supporting cast that includes Jo Jin Woong, Kim Sung Kyun, Ma Dong Seok, Lee Sung Min, Lee Kyung Young and Yoon Ji Hye join in the swordplay and shootouts as the fierce and colorful pieces of a bandit clan, or "kundo," that steals from the rich and gives to the poor in these lawless and violent times.

As the illegitimate son of a gisaeng and a nobleman, Jo Yun (Kang Dong Won) grew up enduring the spite and antipathy of his father and stepmother. After his brother's death, Jo Yun seizes the chance to secure power and fortune by plundering the poor and eliminating those in his way, including his own family members. He hires poor butcher Dochi (Ha Jung Woo) to assassinate his pregnant sister-in-law, but Dochi backs out on the deed. For turning on Jo Yun, Dochi loses his family and nearly his own life, but he gets saved by the kundo. From that day on, Dochi grows into a new man with a singular purpose: bloody revenge against Jo Yun.

Product Information

The proliferation of corrupt officials in the late Joseon period ignited the rise of a Robin Hood-style gang of bandits.

The year is 1859. The late Joseon dynasty was a period of social and economic unrest in Korea, and it was also a time of great tyranny. Due to continuous natural disasters and poor harvests, poverty, hunger and death are rampant. The aristocrats rule the country and, concerned only with their own wealth, they exploit and persecute the poor. In these turbulent times, a band of fighters named 'Kundo' rise against the authorities. While the king stands powerless against them, 'Kundo' becomes a figure of fear to undeserving nobles, and a ray of hope in the lives of long-suffering citizens. The members of 'Kundo' believe that their cause is more important than their own lives……

Professional Review of "Kundo: Age of the Rampant (DVD) (Malaysia Version)"

February 24, 2015

This professional review refers to Kundo: Age of the Rampant (Blu-ray) (Korea Version)
For his fourth feature, director Yoon Jong Bin follows up his multiple award-nominated Nameless Gangster with Kundo: Age of the Rampant, a Korean style homage to westerns and the films of Sergio Leone. Seeing Yoon working again with charismatic actor Ha Jung Woo (The Yellow Sea), the film also stars Kang Dong Won (Haunters) in his first role since returning from military service, and was another big hit, setting records and opening at the top of the domestic box office.

The film is set back in the 19th century towards the end of the Joseon dynasty, a turbulent and violent time when the poor were oppressed and exploited by the ruling aristocratic class. Kang Dong Won plays Jo Yun, a young man born into a wealthy noble family but denied legitimacy due to his mother being a concubine, who after the death of his brother decides to try and seize power for himself, ruthlessly cutting down anyone who stands in his way. The only obstacle to his ascension is his pregnant sister-in-law, and so he hires lowly butcher Dolmuchi (Ha Jung Woo) to kill her for him and secure his position. When Dolmuchi decides not to go through with the deed, Jo Yun has his family slaughtered, though the butcher is rescued by the Kundo, a gang of outlaws led by Dae Ho (Lee Sung Min, best known for his roles in popular television series such as Misaeng). Renamed Dochi, he joins the band as they rob corrupt officials, single-mindedly plotting to take revenge against Jo Yun.

There have been a handful of Asian takes on the western over the last few years, notably including Kim Jee Woon's 2008 outing The Good, the Bad, The Weird, dubbed a "kimchi western" in reference to the spaghetti westerns of Sergio Leone which inspired it. With Kundo: Age of the Rampant, Yoon Jong Bin goes down the same path, with an instantly recognisable tale of the downtrodden poor, an evil ruling class, and the rough and ready outlaws who rise up to challenge them. Split into five chapters in pulp novella style, the film is every inch the classic western archetype, though thanks to some energetic direction and flair from Yoon, it feels fun and fresh rather than overly-familiar. Not taking things too seriously also helps, and while the film is dark and violent at times, this is balanced with some surprisingly effective comic relief, the script packing in a few great one-liners along the way and coming across as somewhat knowing without ever winking at the camera.

Though the actual plot is predictable and not terribly substantial, Yoon makes up for this with his skilful handing of a great ensemble cast, and as with Nameless Gangster even the smallest roles display a certain amount of attention to detail. This really brings the film and its narrative alive, as do strong lead performances from the always excellent Ha Jung Woo, here playing very much to his strengths, and from Kang Dong Won as the suitably evil villain. The film spends a commendable amount of time developing both its protagonist and antagonist, and Yoon uses the two to expand on social issues, with the rich-poor divide having obvious contemporary parallels. This in turn gives it a certain edge, and though only a background concern, its Robin Hood theme adds a rousing undercurrent of righteousness.

The western connection is also seen in the visuals, which are at times fantastically stylish, many frames recalling the works of Leone and nodding towards the epic ?the film really looks great throughout, and won many award nominations on the technical side, deservedly so. While at nearly two hours and twenty minutes it's a fairly long affair, with a few leisurely paced stretches, Yoon does a top notch job with the thrilling action, packing in lots of swordplay and shootouts. The one-on-one showdowns, duels and mass battles all impress, and the film definitely boasts some of the year's standout genre set pieces, particularly during the final act.

Kundo: Age of the Rampant was easily one of the best Korean blockbusters of 2014, a winning and very enjoyable Korean western. From his indie beginnings with the acclaimed and award winning The Unforgiven back in 2005, Yoon Jong Bin continues to prove himself one of the most interesting and accomplished directors working in Korea today, not to mention one of the best purveyors of character driven action.
