YesAsia Editorial Description

The poster girl for J-pop "cool" for many years, Sheena Ringo built a reputation for writing her own songs and constantly pushing musical boundaries. In 2004, she launched the superband Tokyo Jihen (Tokyo Incidents) with producer Kameda Seji on bass, Hata Toshiki on drums, PE'Z member H Zetto M on keyboards, Hirama Mikio as lead guitarist, and herself as lead vocals and guitarist. Tokyo Jihen's much-anticipated first album, Kyoiku, includes the singles Gunjo Biyori and Sonan, as well as some new songs played at the 2004 Fuji Rock Festival including "Service," Eki mae ("In Front of the Station") and Omatsuri Sawagi ("Razzle-Dazzle").

Music Good, but Over-compressed Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
I was first introduced to Tokyo Incidents by a friend who show me the Dynamite Out! DVD. I was instantly captured by the tight musicianship and showmanship. So I had high hopes for this album. I was looking for some fusion-infused rock.

Sure the songs in the CD was very innovative and energetic. But boy was it LOUD! The hi-hats of the first song was so piercing I just have to skip it. Too much compression to the point of distortion. It's over-produced and mastered to a point that there are no nuances whatsoever. I'd hope they removed some of the processing, master it, lower the levels a bit so I can listen to the instruments as they should sound like.

Didn't grab me Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
I love Shiina Ringo, but there wasn't a single song that grabbed me. If you want a great album with Shiina and the Tokyo Jihen musicians (and they are fantastic) backing her up, get Electric Mole. This is an all region DVD of live concert material and features Shiina's solo album songs, especially from KSK.

Noise?! Cool! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Kyoiku is a natural progression from Ringo's Karuki Samen Kuri no Hana album. Gone are the synth beats from KSK and in come a full band. Just like KSK, Kyoiku is a rock album that is heavily jazz influenced (some say Ringo's music was always jazz influenced since her Muzai Moratorium days) the addition of Mikki (lead guitar), HZM (keyboard), and Hata (Mika Nakashima's drummer) give Tokyo Jihen a low-down dirty and raw sound; good ol' Kameda is playing bass as usual. The perfect combination for rocking!

Songs range from gentle piano numbers to all-out crazyness ("Service" is a jazz song you can mosh to). Some are just strange ("Love for the Homeland").

Ringo has confessed in interviews that she is burnt out from solo work and needs to share the workload. HZM lends a hand and composes 2 tracks for the album. Very Good.

Noise... Customer Review Rated Bad 1 - 1 out of 10
My ears are still hurting from listening to this awful album. I don't know what Shiina was thinking when she decided to make this album, but I really wish she'd go back to just being Shiina Ringo because Tokyo Jihen is a chapter in her life that I can't wait to forget.
Aweful, loud, irritating music with nearly incomprehensible vocals. Total waste of my money.

Shiina Ringo does it again! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
I love Karuki Zamen Kuri no Hana and all, but it's nice to see Shiina go back to what made me fall in love with her music in the first place. This album is all about her old style, so if you like the type of music that's on Shouso Strip you're going to dig this too. It's a fairly diverse album so you might find a couple of the tracks to be "hokey," but she's known for her versatility and it definitely shines here. A must for all Shiina Ringo fans--highly recommended!
