Is love related to sex or separate from it? You may find an answer in rookie director Jody Luk's directorial debut Lazy Hazy Crazy, an unconventional Hong Kong youth film revolving around three high school girls involved in compensated dating, with themes of sexuality, love, as well as friendship.
Childhood friends Chloe (Koyi Mak) and Tracy (Ashina Kwok) befriend Alice (Fish Liew), who is bullied by fellow classmates. Alice and Chloe quickly become close friends because they both earn money through compensated dating. Alice helps Chloe set up her own dating profile and teaches her how to deal with clients. However, this only annoys the more reserved Tracy. To help share the rent, Tracy works at a maid café and asks Chloe to introduce her to club girl work. She also begins to exclusively "date" handsome and rich sponsor Raymond (Gregory Wong). Although she harbors a secret crush on basketball team captain Andrew, she still develops a sexual relationship with Raymond in hopes of learning how to sexually attract Andrew. After discovering that Alice is dating Andrew, Tracy takes revenge on her by posting her secret sex video online. Rumors about Alice being a prostitute circulate at school, leading to her breakup with Andrew. Gossip, jealousy and misunderstandings ruin the girls' friendship, but when the three come back together to find their missing dog, they realize that nothing is more important than each other. Packaged as a story of compensated dating, Lazy Hazy Crazy intends to talk about friendship. Luk places great emphasis on the protagonists' unbreakable friendship through scenes showing the girls sleeping and bathing together and helping each other with intimate tasks like shooting sexy photos and finding a missing tampon. However, their questionable friendship is easily challenged due to a man and mended just because of a puppy. Rather than friendship, something more important is conveyed in the film: different attitudes towards sex and love in contemporary society. Tracy reflects a clear-cut love rule: no love without sex. Told that men are only interested in women's bodies and sex, she engages in compensated dating, thinking that she can learn to be sexually attractive. Her love interest Andrew exhibits the social value that sex and love are independent of each other. Toying with Alice and Chloe, he easily develops intimate relationships with them, and yet hypocritically, he expresses disgust at Tracy's proactive sexual behavior. Though his reaction at first took me by surprise, such a double standard regarding male and female sexuality is very common. Different from other youth films about friendship, puppy love and high school memories, Lazy Hazy Crazy adopts a different approach by setting the story in the backdrop of compensated dating. Unfortunately, the youth and friendship themes don't stand out, and the plot would be more successful if greater focus was placed on the sexual and love attitudes of modern people. However, the point of view in storytelling is well chosen, offering audiences a chance to understand the reasons why teenage girls get involved in compensated dating. Instead of telling mournful stories about compensated dating from an adult perspective, Luk puts aside overt moral judgement and gives voice to the girls to defend their self-worth and convey their stories and inner worlds in a hopeful manner. |
