Hyo-ri’s Monochrome Vibe Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Hyo-ri’s 5th as some of her smokiest vocals to date. But although Hyo-ri sings well and looks great as a desaturated and seductive 60’s retro girl photogenic, ‘Monochrome’ is a pretty good album in its own right. With a bigger musical sound, the songs are solid melodies, catchy with a number having retro leanings to The Supremes, The Ronettes and Martha and the Vendellas Motown types (‘Holly Jolly Bus’, ‘Trust Me’, ‘Going Crazy’, ‘Special’). But also sultry funky soul (Love Radar), American country (Bounced Checks of Love) a little bit of 60s mod rock (Full Moon) and some jazzy-blues indie sounds. Retro. Although K-pops Wonder Girls come to mind by the Motown retro selection, other songs aren’t your regular K-pop ballads or fillers (apart from maybe duo ballad ‘Amor Mio’) but K-style in respective variations on past and modern soul, jazz, indie and Motown influence. Although mostly upbeat, ‘Monochrome’ has a moody selection of dark sensual undertones with occasional Phil Spector echo sonics (‘I Hate Myself’ for one). As a retro K-pop hybrid it does have smatterings of hip hop/RnB but this song set is more thematically engineered to reflect a varied 60s and 70s soul beat. Hyo-ri’s deep sexy singing is certainly blessed with a good song pallet on ‘Monochrome’ though, and hits respective vibes throughout. Other good songs are ‘Better Together’ and ‘Show Show Show’. The moodful and ghostly haunting ‘Oars’ is superb (almost a bit Clannad) and ‘Somebody’ as that mysterious filmic theme; jazzy with double bass timbers and somewhat reminiscent of a 60s James Bond incidental theme harkening to earlier John Barry. But this is a Hyo-ri Lee album of course with Hyo-ri’s ‘Miss Korea’, ‘Bad Girl’ (good cop, bad cop?) songs heralding her Persona Image into a new bargain.

Hyo-ri’s lovely photo imagery (the photo book is excellent) is eclectic and derived to form a nice remixed 60's iconical version. Hyo-ri’s glamorous album photos for me also brings 60's model actress Jean Shrimpton to mind, aside to Monochrome’s more widespread sense of leather and spikes (Bad Girl). If you love 60s soul/retro appeal, you should find ‘Monochrome’ very interesting. It might not be original but the song engineers pull together a lot of established song genre bits well, and fit these music similitudes into a complimentary sultry, despondent and playful moody vibe - Hyo-ri style. For me it’s almost as good as Visage’s new album ‘Hearts and Knives’, but that’s a different story.
