YesAsia Editorial Description

Andy Lau delivers a powerful performance in Lee Rock I, the first of two films chronicling the true story of one Hong Kong police officer's rise to power. Lee Rock (Andy Lau) is a barely-literate street kid who joins the police force only to learn a rough lesson: the goal of being a cop is to gain promotions, and not necessarily to protect and serve. Bribes and kickbacks are a part of the game, and to try and remain clean is to invite isolation and poverty. Lee Rock tries to stick to his personal ideals anyway. But his righteousness earns him derision of the fellow cops and even causes him to lose his beloved fiancee Rose (Chingmy Yau)! Eventually, Lee Rock becomes determined to become Chief of Police to affect change from within, but the obstacles are great. His corrupt superior (Paul Chun) is looking to destroy him, and his new flame Grace (Sharla Cheung) happens to be the daughter of a top gangster! Can Lee Rock make it to the top without tarnishing his very soul? Andy Lau earned a Best Actor Nomination for his performance as the title character in Lee Rock, a tense and intelligent motion picture that brings true-to-life drama to the Hong Kong police genre. Followed by the sequel Lee Rock II, which features the return of Chingmy Yau, and also Aaron Kwok as Lee Rock's son!

Product Information

Director: Lawrence Lau Kwok Cheung

Andy Lau leads a star-studded cast in this chronicle of one young officer's rise to power within the Hong Kong police force in the 1950s. The unscrupulous ways involved in his ascent to power throws tradional moral values of right and wrong into serious question. With remarkable award-winning performances from the strong cast, the film makes a very popular true-to-life gangster drama that spans decades unfolding the life story of a police officer.

When the cops are crooks Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Let me begin with the ending. 'Lee Rock' was created essentially as the first part of a two-part movie, with 'Lee Rock II' being the second part. The films were shown consecutively in Hong Kong's theaters back in 1991; just as the run of 'Lee Rock' was ending, 'LR II' was opened in theaters. Both made great piles of cash at the box office. But purchasers of this DVD should note that they almost certainly also will want to see 'LR II', as the first film comes to a very abrupt end, obviously setting up the second film.

Andy Lau stars as Lee Rock, a good-hearted young man determined to be an honest cop in a police department rife with corruption. However, his efforts to remain morally unbending earn him enemies both on and off the police force. Those enemies soon exact a high cost from Lee, as they burn down the home of Lee's innocent and lovely fiancee Rose (Chingmy Yau); Rose is never found and is presumed dead.

In the wake of this tragedy, Lee changes course. He decides to go along to get along. As he rises on the police force, he too takes a cut of the bribes and graft that the force collects. He also falls in love with the gorgeous and willful daughter (Sharla Cheung Man) of major crime boss Silverfish (James Tin). Upon obtaining a position of command in the department, he seeks to systematize the graft, to make it more like a business tax and less like a hold-up. This approach fails to satisfy his enemies on the force, particularly his chief rival, the ruthless Sgt. Ngan Tung (Paul Chun).

This enmity between Lee Rock and Ngan Tung lies at the heart of the film. Owing to the superb performance by Paul Chun, it makes for very compelling viewing. Chun makes you believe that his rotten-to-the-core character is capable of anything. Another factor which makes 'Lee Rock' such an interesting film is that, as Lee Rock's authority grows in the department, one can never be sure just what moral compromises he is willing to make. How much will he become like Ngan Tung or Silverfish?

'Lee Rock' is a terrific film and, having seen it, I'm now eager to see its sequel. Highly recommended to fans of cop-themed action films.

One of his best works... Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I think this is one of his best earlier works and should have deserved to win The Best Actor award when he had been nominated.
To this day, this is still my favorite. Plus this set comes with a beautiful set of postcards.

Thank YesAsia for selling the movie at bargain price. I would not buy it if it were $35.49. Please put more movie titles in bargain mall. =)
