　　西漢中葉，雄踞北方的遊牧民族匈奴陷入了連年內亂之中，本已岌岌可危的故漢闗係又一次面臨著歷史的抉擇。匈奴傑出首領呼韓邪單于，為了匈奴的統一，審時度勢，決意與漢朝盟好。而他的哥哥呼屠吾斯受一心追求權勢的顓渠閼氏蠱惑，冥頑不化，堅持與漢朝為敵，兄弟倆不得不分道揚鑣。與此同時，漢朝內部圍繞著皇權的鬥爭，在胡漢關係上，也表現出截然不同態度。一時間天下動蕩，危機四伏。

　　在邊關長大的王昭君雖然才貌出眾，見識過人，但是她卻擺脫不了命運的安排，不智不以後庭待詔皂身份進入宮禁森嚴的皇宮。在宮中她不為富貴榮華所打動，潔身自好，深得眾人欣賞。

　　在陰謀篡位的淮陽王、張博的策動下，呼屠吾斯出兵攻漢，大軍勢如破竹，漢廷一片驚慌。呼韓邪見狀決意發兵阻止戰爭。淮陽王趁火打劫，準備裡應外合，奪取皇位。與呼韓邪、呼屠吾斯爭奪匈奴大權的屠耆也蠢蠢欲動，暗中奪取王庭。

　　呼屠吾斯為了救顓渠閼氏，失去了優勢，戰爭越打越苦，最後夫婦二人兵敗而死。邊患平定，為確保胡漢長治久安，呼韓邪決議與漢朝和親。元帝下詔後宮，徵尋願隨單于出塞者。昭君不願終生禁錮宮中，決議自願請行隨公主遠嫁匈奴。呼韓邪入漢，與昭君一見鐘情。
