YesAsia Editorial Description

Cecilia Cheung leads the Legendary Amazons to war in the Jackie Chan-produced costume action epic! It was the first to roll the camera among the Hong Kong actress's comeback projects after her five-year absence from the silver screen. Also returning is director Frankie Chan (A Warrior's Tragedy), who makes this his first film in the new millennium. In his ambitious retelling of the Yang warrior clan's heroic exploits, Cheung takes on the action-intensive lead role of Northern Song-dynasty female general Mu Guiying opposite Taiwan actor/singer Richie Jen as her husband Yang Zongbao. They are flanked by a splendid supporting cast that includes Mainland actress Liu Xiaoqing, action veteran Cheng Pei Pei, as well as Kathy Chow, Chen Zihan, Jin Qiaoqiao, Yu Na, Oshima Yukari, and veteran actor Wu Ma.

During the Northern Song Dynasty, China was often invaded by its powerful neighbor Western Xia. For generations, the loyal warriors of the Yang family dedicated their lives to defending Song's borders. But as the treacherous Prime Minister (Wu Ma) was withholding reinforcements, most male members of the clan had been killed on the battlefield, leaving General Yang Zongbao (Richie Jen) and his vastly outnumbered squad to guard the crucial Heaven Gate Pass. When words come back from the front line declaring the fall of Zongbao, the corrupt imperial court orders Zongbao's young son Wenguang (Xiao Mingyu) to lead the campaign against the ten-times-stronger Western Xia forces. To help Wenguang and protect him on his dangerous mission, the 12 grieving widows of the Yang clan - led by Mu Guiying (Cecilia Cheung), Princess Chai (Liu Xiaoqing), and She Taijun (Cheng Pei Pei) - are determined to arm themselves up and enter the deadly final battle...

Professional Review of "Legendary Amazons (DVD) (China Version)"

January 26, 2012

This professional review refers to Legendary Amazons (2011) (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)
Cecilia Cheung's comeback continues with Legendary Amazons, a Chinese period epic which also marks the return of Frankie Chan (Warrior's Tragedy), being his first outing as director in over ten years. Drawing upon the same source material as Cheng Gang's 1972 Shaw Brothers hit The 14 Amazons, the film is another charting the deeds of the heroic and patriotic Yang clan as they fight to defend the land against barbarian invaders, led by their courageous warrior women. With Jackie Chan onboard as producer, the film sees Cheung joined by a host of other top female performers, including Shaw action legend Cheng Pei Pei (star of many classics including The Lady Hermit and Lady of Steel), Mainland actress Liu Xiaoqing (The Shadow of Empress Wu) and Kathy Chow (Sleepless Town), with popular Taiwanese actor/singer Richie Jen (Punished) and Xiao Mingyu heading up the male contingent and veteran favourite Wu Ma (A Chinese Ghost Story) making an appearance.

Cheung plays Northern Song Dynasty Yang general Mu Guiying, whose husband Yang Zongbao (Richie Jen) is apparently killed in a battle with the Western Xia army when the scheming Prime Minister (Wu Ma) refuses to send in the reinforcements. After their inexperienced son Wenguang (Xiao Mingyu) is ordered to lead the imperial forces on a hopeless battle against the far stronger enemy, Mu Guiying, along with Princess Chai (Liu Xiaoqing), She Taijun (Cheng Pei Pei) and the other Yang widows pick up their weapons and join the camp gain.

Legendary Amazons is a pretty straightforward historical action epic, playing hard and fast with fact in the name of commercial entertainment, director Frankie Chan clearly aiming for blockbuster thrills rather than accuracy. This definitely works in the film's favour, as the absence of any serious expectations or the need for depth allows for a focus on fun, with the Yangs taking on the simplistically evil barbarian hordes with only a few nods to political manipulations and plotting. Whilst in narrative terms the film is a bit of a mess, with the first half hour or so muddling through flashbacks and introducing its vast cast of characters via throwaway on screen titles noting their names, aliases and initial weapon of choice, this is rapidly shoved into the background once the battles start. Any confusion soon ceases to matter, and the film has a fine sense of ridiculous enjoyment, and the same spirit of camaraderie which held together the 1972 Shaw outing.

The best thing about the film is the fact that it packs in an impressive amount of action, with most of the running time being taken up with combat of one sort or another. Director Chan manages a few fairly epic stagings, and though some of the choreography is rather over the top, with too much slow motion and characters frequently spinning around several times and flying ridiculous distances when being hit, the swordplay and martial arts are boisterous and fast moving. There's a fair amount of decent stuntwork on show (also seen in a Jackie Chan style credits sequence blooper reel of mishaps), and though most of the fighting is low impact stuff, it does make for some exciting scenes. It has to be said that this is undermined a little by some often dreadful computer effects, with some bafflingly awful backgrounds and sky colouring in particular - however, on the plus side this does add a few unintentional laughs and so is not entirely unwelcome.

Although the rather basic script doesn't really give Cecilia Cheung much of a chance to convince that she is attempting to return to serious acting, she's decent and likeable enough in the lead role, which despite her headline billing is shared with the other cast members, the film being somewhat of an ensemble piece. She, and indeed the rest of the female Yangs are a bit hard to take seriously since they are all quite clearly far too young for their supposed screen ages, in her case by at least a decade, a fact not helped by their looking exactly the same during flashback sequences.

Given the cheerful lack of pretension shown by Legendary Amazons, this really isn't much of a problem, and if anything only serves to up the entertainment value. Although it might disappoint anyone looking for historical realism or grit, as a semi-wacky and action packed costume epic it certainly stands as an agreeable time passer, with a few extra marks added for fans of Cecilia Cheung.

Remake of a Shaw Brothers classic Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
The Frankie Chan-directed "Legendary Amazons" and the Shaw Brothers-produced "The 14 Amazons" tell essentially the same story: Barbarians of the Western Xia have invaded the territory of the Northern Song dynasty. The warrior women of the Yang family receive a report that the family's patriarch, General Yang Zongbao, has been killed in a defeat of the Song army. Receiving no support from the imperial Prime Minister, the Yang women take it upon themselves to head to the border to do battle with the much larger forces of the Western Xia. Both films are graced with splendid casts. And both films are lavishly mounted, big budget productions. Why then does "Legendary Amazons" prove to be nearly unwatchable, while "The 14 Amazons" is a must-see classic? Let's explore a few of the reasons.

The Frankie Chan film puts the story in service to the action. Much more time is consumed with epic battle scenes which are presented with so many special effects that they resemble a soulless video game. The battles lose their visceral effect and become numbing. The Shaw Brothers film puts the action in service to the story. It takes more time to develop compelling, full-bodied characters. When the battle scenes arrive, they explode with a violence which horrifies. By placing the emphasis on the story rather than the action, the Shaw Bros. movie allows Lily Ho to give one of her signature performances as Yang Wenguang and enables Lisa Lu to create a forceful, richly detailed character out of the family's matriarch, while talented Cheng Pei-Pei is squandered in the same role in the Chan movie.

The Frankie Chan movie makes much of the romance between General Yang (Richie Ren) and Mu Guiying (Cecilia Cheung). This distracts from the greater story of the fate of the dynasty. Moreover, it leads Ms. Cheung to appear as an appealing ingénue much too youthful to be believable as the mother of a son ready to go to war. In the Shaw film, Ivy Ling Bo plays the same role as Ms. Cheung, but is not asked to play a dewy-eyed ingénue. Consequently, Ling Bo brings the needed maturity to her part and the viewer believes that she could be the Yang family's chief strategist and the mother of a young warrior, although she was only one year older than was Cecilia Cheung at the time when they made these movies.

Stick with "The 14 Amazons". It doesn't need a remake, particularly one as clumsy as "Legendary Amazons".

Boring Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
Legendary Amazons was a boring film for me.I guess im not used to seeing women in battle. The end fight was not bad and there were few cool action shot.Eventhough I do like some battle films which are set in the past but with Legendary Amazons the characters and some parts of the story was just boring and not engaging.
