YesAsia Editorial Description
Award-winning and much beloved, Les Belles makes a grand reentry into the cinema world with Intercontinental Video's ballyhooed release of the Shaw Brothers film library! Legendary Linda Lam Doi stars as a dancer who joins a dance troupe given to a rather restricting social rule: the men and women are not supposed to interact...ever! Even worse, she immediately butts heads with the head of the troupe (popular Peter Chen Hou), leading to plenty of antagonistic sparks. Luckily, she finds romance through a small personal ad, and love blossoms without the two ever seeing one another. Surprise, surprise, but her pen pal turns out to be the very man that she can't stand in real life. Circumstances do conspire to stop the two from realizing their dream love, but this is an energetic musical romance told in glorious Shawscope, so something good has to happen. It's not whether this pair will find love, but how many spectacular musical numbers the audience will enjoy before they finally do! Sumptuous production values and a winning romantic story make Les Belles a cinema treat even today!

Acknowledged as one of the greatest Hong Kong musicals , this lavish Eastmancolor and Shawscope production set a standard in Hollywood-style tune-fests that has rarely been surpassed . It infuses its wispy plot with such style and wit that the results are pure pleasure . It won awards for Best Music and Best Art Direction , while Linda Lin Dai won the Best Actress statuette for her performance as a dancer who finds romance with her boss’s pesky son .

Charming Shaw Bros. musical
Charming Shaw Bros. musical
"Les Belles" is a charmer! Lin Dai shines as a dancer who hires into a new troupe. In her new company, the owner's son (Chen Ho) proves to be a high-handed taskmaster. The strong-willed Lin immediately clashes with the strong-willed Chen. Coincidentally, they begin corresponding anonymously with each other through a lonely-hearts service. Through their letters, they fall in love, but are horrified when they discover their correspondents' true identities.
Lin Dai and Chen Ho have marvelous chemistry in "Les Belles" and Miss Lin has never looked lovelier. The dance numbers are terrific and the costuming and set decoration are gorgeous. Kao Pao-shu is winning as Chen Ho's mother, although it's a bit comical to recall that Chen actually was one year older than Kao! The DVD has flaws. In a few scenes, the image quality is washed out or foggy. There are no English subtitles for the songs. Most seriously, the film's sound is badly marred, although it always is understandable. Nonetheless, the film's great plusses definitely vastly outweigh its negatives. I highly recommend "Les Belles" for anyone who loves musicals or romantic comedies. |

Best Actress over Ko Lan
Though Lin Dai had charm and beauty, but to win a best actress award with this movie over Ko Lan's "Love of the Wild Rose"?? Come on! There must have been some hocus pocus. Even Betty Loh Tih's "The Beautiful Wife and the Deformed Husband", also from Shaw that year, would have been a better candidate. Lin Dai played this frothy comedy with some adequate dancing, but not much else.
The movie on the other hand have some merits for being entertaining, but also comes across alittle too "Hollywood" and "sterile". |

Sub-quality restoration
This restored movie needs improvement technically. The SHAWSCOPE becomes HAWSCOP with both letters cut off from view. In some scenes, some characters are also off screen and one can see only part of the person.
The plot is weak as it always is when the movie is focussed on dances and songs. Lin Dai, although a good actress, certainly did not deserve a best actress award in this film. Besides the adequate dancing ability, I really don't see any special merits in her acting in this movie. If anyone should win an award, it should be given to Peter Chen Ho who had a natural flair for comedy. |

Why a Best Actress Award ?
LES BELLES was a musical known for its colorful and lavish sets and LIN DAI looks cute in that can-can outfit, but I wondered why was this role awarded her
a BEST ACTRESS trophy making her a third time recipient of that honor. She was dubbed in her singing, her"emoting" was a barage of embarassing pouts and scowls, she seemed over confident of her "talents" to pulled off a musical role which she was never known for to begin with. This mess of a musical was a cheap copy of Judy Garland's "In the Good Old Summertime" with none of the original's charm and style. Fans of Lin Dai should stay clear of this shabby effort if they want to keep beautiful memories of her in earlier better movies. |

Nice movie, mediocre disc
English-only fans should know that this is the first Shaws musical released by IVL that subtitles only the dialog and not the songs. This is quite frustrating, especially during the 15-minute Chinese-period number "Man Chun's Journey in Search of Her Love,"in which the lyrics tell a story.
This is also the first IVL/Shaws disc that has noticable technical problems. The color is washed out at times, and the sound seems distorted and harsh. I hope this is not a sign that the high standards of this ambitious re-issue program are starting to slip. |
