YesAsia Editorial Description

After some high-profile roles on the big screen (Ang Lee's Lust, Caution and Jackie Chan blockbuster Little Big Soldier), Taiwan pop king Leehom Wang achieves a major breakthrough in his cinematic career with Love in Disguise. Making his movie directorial debut and co-writing the script, Leehom puts his talent in finding resonance with the audience to good use through the visual media. The superstar doesn't leave his idol charisma idle either, taking the lead role in the romantic comedy with co-stars Liu Yifei (The Forbidden Kingdom), Qiao Zhenyu (Confucius), Chen Han Tien (Monga), and "Super Girl" singer-songwriter Zeng Yike. Renowned actress Joan Chen (Lust, Caution) makes a vital supporting appearance and there are some unexpected star cameos, too.

Sharing the writing duties are idol drama screenwriters Du Sin Yi (My Queen) and Chen Hung Chieh (Hi My Sweetheart), who give the genre conventions an art-mimics-life twist drawing parallels with reality. The film features Leehom as big-time pop star Du Minghan, who yearns for a simpler life free of packed schedules and relentless paparazzi. He enrolls himself in a music academy in the guise of a scruffy-looking student so that nobody recognizes him. But love isn't something that can be concealed when he meets adorable classmate Song Xiaoqing (Liu Yifei). Also responsible for the soundtrack of the film, Leehom has earned himself a Best Original Film Song nomination at the 47th Golden Horse Awards with the theme song "All the Things You Never Knew".

Impossibly famous an incredibly young age, DMH (Leehom Wang) has only ever known a celebrity pop star existence. Yet, despite all the perks and glamour, there is still something lacking in his charmed life: True love. Refuses to give up in his search, with the help of fellow musician and friend WZB, DMH disguised as regular Joes in hope to find true love. While incognito, DMH and WZB strmble across the performance of a classical Chinese orchestra and DMG is immediately captivated by the melodies of the guzheng soloist, LMQ (Crystal Liu), a classical music student at the Shanghai Conservatory, who's affections lie with the accomplished, if not arrogant, conservatory virtuoso, ZXZ. DMH nevertheless promisses to help bring them together, deteermined to spend more time with LMQ.

Inevitably, DMH's distraction from his superstar responsibilities does not go unnoticed Agent Joan (Joan Chen). Further more, as he and LQM grow closer, it becomes increasingly difficult to conceal his identity. What happens if she finds out who he really is? Can she really love and respect a celebrity pop star? And can she forgive him for lying?

Professional Review of "Love In Disguise (DVD) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)"

December 13, 2010

Taiwanese pop superstar and actor Leehom Wang expands his horizons further by co-writing and taking up the directorial reigns with Love in Disguise. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the film is a romantic comedy which sees him sticking to a subject matter which he obviously knows well himself, following a pop idol who disguises himself as a music student in order to try and find love. Wang, who has previously featured and impressed in the likes of Ang Lee's Lust, Caution and the Jackie Chan vehicle Little Big Soldier takes the lead role, with a fine supporting cast that includes actress Liu Yifei (The Forbidden Kingdom), Qiao Zhenyu (Confucius), Chen Han Tien (Monga) and "Super Girl" singer-songwriter Zeng Yike, not to mention acclaimed industry veteran Joan Chen.

Wang plays pop star Du Minghan (for some reason referred to as DMH in the English subtitles), whose busy schedule leaves no room for romance. After a chance encounter on the road with student Song Xiaoqing (Liu Yifei), he decides to stalk her to the Far East Musical Academy, going undercover with bandmate Wei Zhi Bai (Chen Han Tien), or WZB in the subtitles, as poor classmates from the remote, non-existent Nail Town. DMH does his best to woo her and to fight off rival Mufan (Qiao Zhenyu), whilst avoiding his agent (Joan Chen) and dodging the paparazzi, not to mention trying to promote the cause of traditional Chinese music.

Love in Disguise certainly sees Wang playing things safe, and the film follows the age old romantic comedy blueprint pretty much to the letter. There's very little in the way of any surprises, and DMH's relationship with Song Xiaoqing (who the subtitles oddly don't refer to as SXQ) progresses entirely along predictable lines. The film has a standard three act structure which revolves around his deception, her finding out that he is actually rich and famous, and finally the question as to whether or not this means she'll dump him as a result. This approach gives the film a distinctly generic feel, and neither Wang nor fellow writers Du Sin Yi (My Queen) and Chen Hung Chieh (My Sweetheart) make much effort to add anything new to the form. Not helping matters is the fact that the film really overloads on product placement, almost to the point of Wang shamelessly holding up certain skincare items for the camera in the manner of cheap television drama.

Where the film does have a slightly different flavour is in its focus on traditional Chinese music, with lots of erhu and qin playing. On this score Wang does deserve some credit, and although he gives himself quite a few chances to show off his own pop singing skills, he makes an effort to combine this with something a little more cultural. This is furthered by the film's frequent use of short fantasy sequences, many of which feature traditional Chinese art or landscapes. Whilst none of this is ever really employed in any depth, it gives the film a definite lift.

This aside, the film's main strength is its overall sense of amiability, never taking itself too seriously and providing a fair amount of light hearted fun. Along with its flights of fantasy, it also has a number of cutesy touches, most of which work well enough, and a respectable amount of comedy and low key wackiness. Wang actually does a good job in handling the laughs, never overplaying his hand or making the obvious Chen Han Tien comedy relief too irritating. The film's capers are genuinely amusing at times, as DMH rushes around trying to be two people at once, resulting in plenty of misunderstandings and moments of daft incompetence, including a left field though effective Bin Laden gag. Perhaps more importantly, the cast are all on good form, and though Wang is fine in the centre stage role, despite overdoing the puppy dog eyes at times, it's the supporting players that arguably carry the film. The gorgeous Liu Yifei does an above average job in a fairly sketchy role as his love interest, managing enough chemistry with her onscreen beau to distract from the unlikeliness of their fairytale coupling, and proving herself an actress to watch in the future. Both Qiao Zhenyu and Chen Han Tien are decent in their roles, and Joan Chen adds a real touch of class even in such a meaningless recurring cameo part.

Ultimately, Love in Disguise delivers exactly as expected, and should certainly be enjoyed by fans of Leehom Wang or just romantic comedies in general. Although it's a bit of a shame he didn't attempt something more ambitious for his directorial debut, the film is a creditable effort and is probably one of the more enjoyable examples of the genre of late.

A Hilarious Romantic Comedy Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
After reading all the negative professional reviews of the movie the only reason I went to see it at a film festival in Los Angeles was because they advertised Leehom and the cast would be there which turned out to be false, no one from the movie was there.

As for the movie, I was expecting one of those sad “poor me” I’m rich and famous and no one loves me for me stories but this was nothing like that, it was a hilarious romantic comedy! And the inclusion of traditional Chinese music into the story line, not to mention the actual music, was brilliant. I think the musicians in the film are probably actual classical music students as they are portrayed in the movie. The cast is great, in addition to Leehom’s work I really loved the work of Joan Chen, Han Dian Chen, and Zhenyu Qiao. I liked Crystal too but since her character was plaid straight there wasn’t as much to her compared to the others. There isn’t much to the story and what I’d call the “light bulb” moment for Crystal’s character was weak and could have used some strengthening but otherwise it really worked for me. I really like the quirkiness of this movie, it reminded me a lot of Japanese movies.

On the downside there is Garnier product placement in the movie but not as much as the reviews led me to believe, twice is all I counted, but the one was so poorly done that no wonder the professional reviewers dwelled on it. And there were editing issues as well, one scene was cut short and another was just a shot of Joan Chen’s character crying which didn’t tie into anything and on top of it was cut short. There are also issues of low production value, there is a scene where DMH is chasing after Song Xiaoqing through a crowd and in one shot there is no crowd, all the people are standing on the sidewalks up against the buildings leaving an obvious crowd controlled path open for the actors. That scene was poorly shot. And as with Leehom’s other work, this too was “very formal” as I’ve heard his worked described before. I would describe it more as sterile. I’m sure some of it comes from wanting to meet censor standards in China since he is so popular there and wants to continue to work there but from an artistic standpoint he never pushes the envelope nor does he seem to reach as an artist so everything he does always sort of sounds and looks the same which is a shame because he is so very, very talented and LOVE IN DISGUISE is a wonderful vehicle for displaying those multiple talents.

Funny story, and good English subtitles Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I found this story even better than I had antecipated. It was really funny, especially when Du Minghan after having disguised himself as a student, has to go to his own concert with his fellow students and perform without them noticing he is gone. A typical scene, but still extremely funny. The music and songs in the film are beautiful. By combining "pop" music with Chinese traditional music, it opened my eyes to a musical genre I hadn't heard before. I really like it when something can do that to you, and this is afterall also what the film and the story in the film is surposed to do.

About this edition of "Love in disguise" by Kam & Ronson Enterprise Co.Ltd. The English subtitles on this edition are really good, BUT they are extremely small! I had a hard time reading them because they were so small. It didn't help zooming or inhancing the TV screen size. It strains your eyes quite a lot because you have to focus on something small at the same time as focusing on the film in a "normal" size. The difference takes to time to ajust to, and this is really sad because it affects the experience of the film. But at least the subtitles are good and understandable.
