Professional Review of "Love In Time (2012) (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)"
Love in Time is an old fashioned Hong Kong romantic comedy directed by Leefire, a multi-talented type also known as a playwright, radio host and song writer, following up on his not entirely successful 2007 Give Love which he co-helmed with Joe Ma. Now making his solo debut, he offers up another slightly leftfield take on the genre, with popular TVB actor Bosco Wong (Together) and actress Stephy Tang (East Meets West headlining as a couple of (hopefully!) distant cousins falling in love, with support from Sammy Leung (Love Undercover), Danny So (The Way we Were) and Zhao Ke (Chase our Love).
Bosco Wong plays Cho, an amiable slacker type, who scrapes out a living by selling ice cream from his truck with his amusingly named friend and roommate, the womanising Beer (Sammy Leung), living together in a small flat owned by his uncle. Things change when Cho is forced to take in his cousin Tina (Stephy Tang), not least since the two initially don't seem to get on at all. As is usually the case, they slowly warm to each other and develop feelings, though matters are complicated when she finds a job working for suave interior designer Machi (Danny So), who she mistakenly believes is Daniel, her as yet unseen internet love. With Cho being the real Daniel though unable to admit his own passions, the scene is set for all manner of misunderstandings and odd couple style shenanigans. Love in Time is one of those films which is all the more enjoyable for the simple fact that it doesn't sound like much on paper. Certainly, the setup is familiar to a fault (the potentially distasteful and never developed issue that Cho and Tina are cousins aside), the plot predictable and the characters generic, and it's obvious that little originality or creativity went into Leefire's rather pedestrian script. However, the film really just kind of clicks in all the ways that matter, and it has the distinct and very pleasing feel of an authentic old school Hong Kong comedy, basically just following a couple of down on their luck buddies trying to make money and pick up girls. Cho and Beer (!) are a likeable pair, and it's a great deal of fun watching them scheming and struggling to get by, the film having a natural and laid back charm. The central romance between Cho and Tina also rings sweetly true, and though the plot goes quite badly off the rails towards the end, its relationships are for the most part far more convincing and affecting than those of most other similarly themed efforts. Leefire's direction is also surprisingly solid, and the film has a pleasant visual style throughout with some eye catching moments and colourful production values. There's an amiable pace to the drama, and the film neither takes itself too seriously nor ever goes overboard in terms of comedy, most of the laughs being character based rather than silly slapstick. The majority of the gags hit the target, though this is mainly due to the efforts of the cast rather than the script, with the stars all being good value for money. Bosco Wong does a fine job in the lead, Cho being a flawed though decent sort who's easy enough to root for, and Stephy Tang is cute and charismatic in her usual style, even managing a brief flash of French maid cosplay (a scene which for many will be worth the price of admission). As a screen couple they have the all-important spark and chemistry needed to make the viewer care whether they'll end up together or not, and this gives the films romance element a real boost. Though Danny So has a bit of a one note role, Sammy Leung puts in a lively performance as Beer, making for comic relief and having a surprisingly substantial subplot of his own. While none of this amounts to anything truly special or memorable, Love in Time is nevertheless very entertaining and much better than it should have been, even for those who normally steer well clear of romantic comedies. There's a certain innocence and charm at play here that sets it apart from the increasingly brash materialism of many other Chinese genre films, and Leefire manages to hold the interest and strike mostly the right notes despite the over-familiarity of it all. by James Mudge – BeyondHollywood.com |

A romantic comedy ... for a while
The first hour or so of "Love in Time" reminded me of the zany mid-'80s Chow Yun Fat comedies. Working class folks struggle with menial jobs while searching for love, all the while bellowing at each other at the top of their lungs. Unlike those Chow Yun Fat golden oldies, writer/director Leefire's thoroughly up-to-date film spends its last 35 minutes wallowing in its characters' maudlin self-loathing. With this film, Leefire creates something new: a nihilistic anti-love story, a film in which everyone's hopes and dreams end up shattered. He must find Patrick Kong's cynical romances too optimistic. Enjoy the laughs in the first 65 minutes because it gets pretty dark thereafter.
Ill-tempered, chain-smoking Cho (Bosco Wong) lives with his womanizing buddy Beer (Sammy Leung) in an apartment rented from Cho's uncle. To make ends meet, the pals unenthusiastically sell ice cream from a truck owned by Cho. The cute girl downstairs (Zhao Ke) pines for Cho, but he doesn't notice; instead, he moons over an on-line 'girlfriend' he's never met. Tina (Stephy Tang), who is entirely unknown to Cho, shows up unannounced on Cho's doorstep demanding to move in. It turns out that they are cousins; she is the daughter of Cho's uncle/landlord. She has returned from years spent in Taiwan to look for a job in Hong Kong. Tina helps out with the ice cream truck business. One day she delivers ice cream confections to an interior design office, where she gets hired on the spot by the company's handsome manager Machi (Danny So, who, alas, cannot act). Tina is smitten by her new boss, but torn because she has begun to develop feelings for her cousin Cho. Meanwhile, Cho's pal Beer inexplicably has fallen head over heels in love with currency-exchange girl Mo Kiu (Sita Chan, made up to look very plain). Beer learns that Mo Kiu is in desperate need of funds; he comes up with a disastrous scheme to raise those funds for her. Things don't go quite as planned for anyone. The movie's lurch in tone from wacky romantic comedy to grim drama is jarring. Its story relies far too often on extremely unlikely coincidences. Its final scene ends with a cheap gimmick that left this viewer greatly ticked off. The film, however, is not without its strengths, which primarily lie in the performances of Stephy Tang and Bosco Wong. The manner by which they steer their characters from mutual disdain into budding affection is remarkable. |

Great to see Stephy in colorful (and sexy) com-rom
For me it’s great just to see Stephy again in a main role for “Love in Time” but I found this a quite good film. I liked Bosco’s love struck role, slight 60’s color psychedelic, Sammy’s ‘bad boy’, Stephy’s cool quirky charisma and for me the dodgy green ice cream van brought to mind Del Boys three wheeler (lol). Not to say Cho’s ice creams fell off the back of a lorry of course…lol. But the crew here certainly have to make ends meet. Cho rooms up with squeaky-bed-springs-womanizer Beer (Sammy) who the latter sells ice creams with Cho but keeps knocking Cho about having no gf in his life. Cho chats with women online though and in fact chats unknowingly to Tina (Stephy) using an alias named Daniel. Tina gets to like this online ‘Daniel’ quite a bit. But Cho’s ice cream sales are miserable (would beer ice cream have worked?) but Cho’s uncle keeps him safely out of debt by helping to pay to keep a roof over his head. But then Tina comes over to stay and at first Cho is irate and displeased (Beer seems to be happy as Tina’s another woman to ‘love’). But when Cho gets a phone call from his uncle who reveals Tina is Cho’s cousin and must keep Tina fed, roofed and watered (or else!), Cho changes his antagonistic attitude, tells Beer to keep his hands off her and asks Tina to help assist his ice cream selling, until Tina can get a job as an interior designer. But Cho slowly finds feelings for his ‘new’ cousin. As things improve on the ice cream front, Tina suddenly lands an interior designer job and first meeting boss Machi (Danny So), a nice decent guy wins over Tina’s heart, who she believes could be ‘Daniel’. Cho gets jealous but he assists Tina on mock dinner dates so to help Tina on her first important date with Machi. In his heart though Cho wishes Tina loved him instead and realize his inner ‘Daniel’.
LIT is funny, cute, sexy and a bad lads movie, but with fatal heart. Stephy gets to do some fun cosplay preparing for her job interview - the French maid outfit is number one, but Tina settles for the classic spectacled sexy secretary look. Machi is pleasantly surprised (as was I!). Freeze frame ending was…possibly sad. It was seriously sad though of the loss of singer Sita Chan since LIT was made. I’m not familiar with Sita who plays a kiosk girl here. But Sita’s on the making of – so beautiful. A terrible loss of a young lady as it would have been great to have seen more of Sita. Life is bigger than we think, but condolences to all who loved her. |
