C.T. Yu aks Spring (Teresa Mo) and her daughter, Karena (Karena Ng), work respectively as a Designer and Steward Manager in Multination Enterprise of men's Underwear founded by their brother and uncle, Hugo (Raymond Wong). For the sake of winning back his ex-girlfriend, Muse (Hai Qing), who is now a world Class Fashion Designer; Hugo pretends his business to be at a brink of bankruptcy and therefore hoping to recruit her for help. Muse reckons and seizes the opportunity to take revenge on Hugo for his past insulting remarks of women as inferiors. As a prerequisite, she demands him to establish a New Fashion Line name under "Mini Men" and achieve positive results before she will accept the offer. With no room for mistakes, Hugo employs Top Model Jojo (Lynn Xiong) for a healthy competition against Spring; having each side designing a Collection Set in which the winner will take charge of the New Fashion Line. Seeing Spring under deep stress, her desperate daughter fatefully runs into Stand-in Actor, Fei (Ronale Cheng), who offers his job experience as an inspiration to her mother. However, what worries Spring more seems to be the blooming relationship between Karena and Fei. In order to turn the table around, Fei calls upon his dear cousin, Owen (Raymond Lam), who happens to be an ex-Fashion Photographer for reinforcement. Fact is that little does anyone know Owen and Jojo had crossed path before. This journey composed of multiple rivalry battles will surely take a hilarious route towards a meaningful outcome.

No, love is not pyjamas
With Christmas fast approaching, I'm inclined to be charitable in my comments about director Vincent Kok's "Love is ... Pyjamas". Let's not say it is an ineptly directed, chaotically scripted mess of a movie. Let's instead say that it provides lessons in how a cinematic story should not be told. The movie opens with Fai (Ronald Cheng) in black-face make-up, wearing a dress and an afro wig, faking a 'black' accent and calling himself Beyonce. Let's not say that this scene is shockingly racist for a film made in 2012; instead, let's say that there may be a handful of sad people who find it mildly amusing.
Spring (Teresa Mo) and her daughter Autumn (Karena Ng) are clothing designers for the garment company run by Spring's brother Hugo (Raymond Wong). The company has been going downhill since Hugo was dumped by girlfriend and fashion mogul Muse (Hai Qing), and now is on the verge of bankruptcy. Muse rejected Hugo when she heard him say that 'women are like clothes' (i.e., women are interchangeable and easily discarded). Now Hugo seeks Muse's help in rescuing his company. Muse offers to market for him a new women's product line to be based upon the theme "men are like clothes". Hugo brings in top designer Jojo (Lynn Xiong) to develop the new line; Spring demands that she and her daughter be given the chance to compete against Jojo for the line. One might expect that a film with this premise would spend most of its time showing Spring and Autumn, on the one hand, and Jojo, on the other hand, working hard to conceive and develop this new fashion line. "Love Is ... Pyjamas" chooses a different course, devoting most of its time to random goofiness, like a long, clumsy scene in which Raymond Wong and Teresa Mo attempt to Zumba. I wondered whether the film ever would return to its original premise. Hugo tries to patch things up with Muse, which given that Raymond Wong is 32 years older than lovely Hai Qing is a horrifying thought, and Fai and Autumn fall in love, which given that Ronald Cheng is 21 years older than Karena Ng is nearly as horrifying. On the plus side, we don't see them kiss. Ronald Cheng is his usual silly self. Teresa Mo provides a deft comic touch and injects warmth and authenticity into the film. Karena Ng smiles nicely. Lynn Xiong gives hints that she could develop into a skilled comedienne. To stay positive, I'll say nothing more about Raymond Wong. Merry Christmas to one and all! |
