YesAsia Editorial Description
Back in the day, former teen idol Jin Ah (Lee Min Jung) was once the nation's sweetheart, beloved by all. Now she's a DJ with a radio program that's in danger of being axed for low ratings. The pressure's on when a no-nonsense producer, Jae Ik (Lee Jung Jin), is brought onto the show and demands fresh ideas. Though the two get off to a bad start, sparks begin to fly when they see past each other's standoffish exteriors. Jin Ah's proposed segment inviting normal, everyday people to share a story and sing a song turns into a surprise hit, and she even gets the chance to show off her songs on-air again. But a rival's sabotaging could tank her career once and for all.

This professional review refers to Love On-Air (DVD) (2-Disc) (First Press Limited Edition) (Korea Version)
As its title suggests, Love On-Air is a radio themed Korean romantic comedy, which revolves around popular actress Lee Min Jung (Cyrano Agency) as a DJ and former pop star juggling problems in life and love. Directed by Kwon Chil On (Hellcats), the film also features Lee Jung Jin (Troubleshooter) as her potential beau, with support from comedian Lee Kwang Soo (City Hunter), Kim Jung Tae (He's On Duty), and Jung Yu Mi (Thousand Days' Promise), plus cameos from real life rocker Kim Tae Won, and Kim Jong Kook and Gary (Lee Kwang Soo's co-stars on the Korean variety show Running Man).
Lee Min Jung stars as Jin Ah, who in her younger years was a member of top idol group Purple, and who now works as a radio DJ on the show Wonderful Radio. With the program going through a rough patch and listener figures dropping off, the studio brings in a new, tougher producer called Jae Ik (Lee Jung Jin), who soon sets about piling the pressure on Jin Ah and her team. To his surprise, Jae Ik finds himself warming to her, and Jin Ah actually comes up with a winner of a new idea for a new segment which involves bringing in everyday people to tell their stories and sing songs. Although this proves popular and Wonderful Radio is soon riding high in the ratings, a rival sets out to ruin her career and her attempts to get back into singing herself.
Kwon Chil On is a director who seems to work well with actresses and with more female-oriented stories, as seen in his previous outings Hellcats and Loveholic and Love On-Air has a similar feel and tackles many of the same themes. Where this again works well is in that while dealing almost exclusively with its female protagonist, the film never becomes too much of a generic chick flick, having a variety of subplots and some reasonably well written and grounded characters. Although wholly predictable, the script is decent, and plays very much to its strengths, never patronising its audience or straying too far into trite melodrama. There's a definite effort to define Jin Ah as a woman through more than just her burgeoning romance with Jae Ik, and the film benefits by spending just as much, if not more time focusing on her career worries and attempts to figure out where she is going in her life.
Though there's nothing too deep here, Kwon does enough to keep the film interesting, and the mix of romance, drama and comedy is well balanced throughout, with a gentle charm and sense of humour that's funny without ever pushing things too hard. The musical theme works well too, and the various pop songs scattered throughout help to make for a bright and upbeat feel as the film builds to its inevitable concert finale. There's also a neat line in music industry references, both through the various cameos and some girl band related gags, all of which lend the proceedings a slight, though effective air of authenticity.
For any film like this, the most crucial element is the stars, and Lee Min Jung does a solid, likeable job as Jin Ah, winning enough sympathy and never allowing her to become too ditzy or unconvincing. Definitely a more believable protagonist than seen in many other recent romantic comedies, Jin Ah does come across as a real woman with real problems and confused dreams, and this gives the story a boost and distracts somewhat from its familiarity. Though more of a bit part player, Lee Jung Jin is also fine (playing a very different role than in his other recent outing, the child molestation drama No Doubt), and there's a genuine spark between the two. The film's romance is all the better for not being overplayed, and by the time it does finally take centre stage, Kwon has done enough groundwork to make it convincing and natural.
Love On-Air is a fine example of the kind of slick, attractive romantic comedies which Korean cinema does so well. Without offering anything new, it's a well made, appealing film that performs exactly as hoped and should leave the right kind of viewer with a big smile on their face.

Love is in the Radio Air
When I heard Min-jung was to be in this K-pop related movie the first thing I thought of was reading about Min-jung’s big music CD collection (and maybe creaky floorboards). Min-jung’s character Jina as a DJ is apt considering MJ’s music library. ‘Love On Air’ though is a romance built from disdain, when Jina, a songwriter and once famous pop idol with a girl trio named Purple, now works as a radio DJ for station ‘Wonderful Radio’. The radio show’s ratings though are low due to Jina’s on-air outpourings of her past and nostalgia fads for old ballads, so radio boss In-seok (Jeong-tae Kim) hires new producer Jae-hyeok (Jung-jin) to spring-clean up Jina’s dry format. Jae-hyeok though is a cold taskmaster demanding fresh ideas and clashing with Jina and her team over opinions about the radio show. One such clash is when Jina decides to introduce everyday people onto WR so to air their tragic life stories and sing reconciliation songs. Jina serendipitously stumbles across sad stories (Jina also losing her father); a taxi driver and his cancer struck daughter and a schoolgirl, who both enter the radio station to voice their reconciliation with loved ones. These and other such tear filled emotions trend the ratings for WR. It also slightly pleases Jae-hyeok.
But trouble brews as Jina’s DJ slot goes all booby up. Due to ditching her girl band Purple in the past doing a sort of Ziggy Stardust ‘this is the last show we’ll ever do’ on a live TV show, so Jina could do more song writing, ensued a rift between Jina and her Purple rival Mi-ra (Seo Yeong). In-seok also wants Mi-ra as the main WR DJ, so In-seok concocts an idea for Mi-ra to take over the show. This is achieved when Jina, on one of her live radio shows, is accused of plagiarism by a female singer who claims Jina used the woman’s written song in Jina’s own Purple idol hit ‘Angel’. This plagiarism accusation tempers Jina live on air, getting her booted out of the radio station by In-seok for both plagiarism and cursing on air. Jina though only really wants to write songs again and with her song writing talent overlooked, sympathetic Jea-hyeok feels that the ‘little girl lost’ needs more than mere managerial help. Jea-hyeok muses foul play and touched by Jina’s emotional weakness, as much as her hidden talents, tries to find the truth about Jina’s plagiarism accusation, even putting his neck on the line with the ‘Wonderful Radio’ on a ‘last stand’ final show. Love seems to have been ignited.

Chil-on Kwon (his name sounds cool!) also directed ‘Hellcats’ was also strong with musical elements. ‘Wonderful Radio’ (the original title) is also a good light-hearted rom-com that reflects the present K-pop girl pop themes (Eternal Faeries?) and attitudes to music talent, but in essence is a compacted youth orientated K-drama TV series. In fact this film screams ‘I want to be a Korean TV drama!’ with possible sub plots. K-pop girls Dal Shabet appear in cameos (although you see more of DS on the making of DVD) and many K-pop names mentioned. Min-jung’s energy to her central role as Jina is highly focused and balanced (actress with big CD collection as Big Job To Do here) showing a sort of laid-back girly who stands little nonsense. Jina is very tough and determined and like Cinderella ends up at the ball with a self-written killer song to showcase for redemptive applause. Okay, not all are ‘blessed’ by the Golden Divine Boot of specific talents, but everyone as the desire to share love and companionship in a fractured disdainful world. Jina desires to express love within some form of musical passion like anyone can, as music especially is the core universal communication sprit of the human soul.
WR is funny too. Especially with funny fella Kwang-soo Lee as Deu-geun (Jina’s ‘manager’). In a subtle sense when Jina and Deu-geun get in a tiz when Deu-geun’s van breaks down, they’re both like a subtle(ish) double act of sorts. Deu-geun is quite charismatic in his over enthusiastic love for Purple’s ‘Angel’ song and Kwang-soo comes across as a brilliant madcap funny guy to Jina’s straight girl. Deu-geun’s entrenched commitment to Jina is paramount. No matter how many zillions of possible tweaks to the girl pop format, Jina and Purple’s ‘Angel’ song is the Alpha and Omega of girl bands for Deu-geun. He’s daft, but well-performed daft characters like Deu-geun are very hard to make funny. The DVD set as a slipcase, a post card and insert sheet. Although I’m a bit tentative about saying this aspect, my post card version was also signed by Min-jung. (Thanks Min-jung ^^ - thumb going into upright position). I say this, as I’m not sure how many are still available signed (I did buy from Yesasia). The Extras DVD as good bits which I found easy to watch without subtitles. The spot-who-at-first- night showing event, dance routines should please K-pop fans. The ‘Angel’ song is also quite, eh, addictive in a way. Yep, pretty goody this!
