Animated fantasy Lu Over the Wall is one of two feature films directed by visionary animator Yuasa Masaaki in 2017. Known for his idiosyncratic, free-wheeling style in acclaimed anime series like The Tatami Galaxy and Ping Pong, Yuasa presents a delightful original story about a mermaid who discovers music in Lu Over the Wall. Glum teen Kai, who recently moved from Tokyo to a small coastal town, likes to keep to himself and make music on his own. His classmates Kunio and Yuho come upon his songs online and needle him to join their band. Kai reluctantly follows them to band practice on the nearby abandoned Merfolk Island that is considered cursed by locals. Kai's music enraptures a young, innocent and very excitable mermaid named Lu who follows him home. Lu's appearance will upturn not only Kai's life but also the town.
