YesAsia Editorial Description

After making a critical splash with Lost in Translation, Sofia Coppola returns with her third feature film, offering a candy-colored revisionist portrait of France's most famous queen, Marie Antoinette. Remembered in popular history for her lavish excesses and the infamous "Let them eat cake" utterance, Marie Antoinette, based on Antonia Fraser's book Marie Antoinette: The Journey, depicts instead a young vibrant woman caught in the times. Backdropped by the luscious beauty of Versailles and infused with a pop soundtrack, the film is a delightful fusion in aesthetics and storytelling, a modernist take on history.

Kirsten Dunst plays the vivacious Austrian from the age of 14, when she enters the court of Versailles with the duty of marrying France's next king, the soon-to-be Louis XVI, portrayed by Jason Schwartzman. Pampered and doted on, Marie Antoinette has all the world's luxuries at her feet, and lives it to her fullest. But life in Versailles is also full of hurtful gossip and her initial inability to incite interest in her husband and produce an heir brings spite and condescension from both her mother and the court. With the passing of Louis XV, Marie Antoinette becomes Queen before turning 18, presiding over a France that would bring numerous ups and downs to her short fairy tale life.

The film is based on the book Marie Antoinette: The Journey by Antonia Fraser.Oscar winner Sofia Coppola brings to the screen a fresh interpretation of the life of France's legendary teenage queen MARIE ANTOINETTE. Betrothed to King Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman), the naive Marie Antoinette (Kirsten Dunst) at the age of 14, she is thrown into the opulent French court which is steeped in conspiracy and scandal. Alone, without guidance, and adrift in a dangerous world, the young Marie Antoinette rebels against the isolated atmosphere at Versailles and, in the process, becomes France's most misunderstood monarch.

Marie Antoinette is merely a pawn in an arranged marriage meant to solidify the harmony between two nations. Her teenage husband, the Dauphin Louis (Jason Schwartzman), is heir to the French throne. But Marie Antoinette is ill prepared to be the kind of ruler for whom the French populace yearns. Beneath her finery, she's a sheltered, frightened and confused young woman, surrounded by vicious detractors, insincere flatterers, puppet masters and gossips. Trapped by the conventions of her station in life, Marie Antoinette must find a way to fit into the complex and treacherous world of Versailles.
