Did producer Wong Jing conceive this plot?
"Marriage With A Liar" has a preposterous premise, but is saved by its secondary story. Chrissie Chau blandly plays Kiki, a materialistic OL soon to be married to hunky cop Sean (Him Law). Out with her standard-issue set of girlfriends for her batchelorette party, Kiki drinks too much, then finds herself naked in bed with a stranger named Jack (Chen Zhi Ming). Kiki can't help herself; handsome Jack is like catnip to her. While she intends never to see him again, she stumbles upon him later that day and cannot resist his charms (although Ms. Chau and Mr. Chen share no real on-screen chemistry). She agrees to spend the three days before her wedding cavorting with him in Macau.
In the line of duty, Kiki's betrothed Sean crosses paths (and inadvertently exchanges phones with) comely street urchin Bobo (Carol Yeung). One thing leads to another and soon Sean agrees to let the homeless Bobo spend a night in his apartment. Unlike Chau and Chen, Him Law and Carol Yeung have on-screen chemistry in spades; it quickly becomes obvious that their night under the same roof will not be innocent. Indeed, they end up sharing a bed for the next three days, while Kiki and her boy toy are Macauing together.
The wedding day arrives, Kiki and Sean both show up for the date, but will they go through with their nuptials? Will their dalliances with Jack and Bobo cost them their marriage? Okay, here's the preposterous part: Can anyone imagine that the bride and groom both could disappear (not with each other) for the three days immediately preceding their wedding and no one notices? It doesn't create a stir? Family and friends aren't concerned about the AWOL couple? Seldom have I seen a less believable premise. The movie isn't helped by Chrissie Chau's drab performance or her silly high-class hooker-style wardrobe. The reason to watch "Marriage With A Liar" -- the only reason -- is the wonderfully spicy relationship between Sean and Bobo. Carol Yeung is a revelation; she is such a vivid, vibrant presence that I couldn't take my eyes off her. And Him Law ably supports her every step of the way. A mediocre movie blessed with two star-making performances.
