YesAsia Editorial Description

When the city goes to sleep, he goes to work in the kitchen. Does he have any customers? More than you think...

After three hit seasons, the late night television drama adaptation of Abe Yaro's manga series hits the silver screen with its first feature film. Following the show's original concept, Midnight Diner is a slice-of-life drama about the owner (Kobayashi Kaoru) of a late-night Shinjuku alleyway restaurant and the stories of his customers. Directed by series regular Matsuoka Joji (Tokyo Tower: Mom and Me, and Sometimes Dad), the ensemble drama follows several characters who frequent the neighborhood hangout: a money-obsessed woman who finds love with a geeky salesman, a homeless young woman who takes refuge as the owner's new assistant cook, a man who comes to Tokyo from Fukushima to find the volunteer that he's fallen for and a mystery urn that's been left at the diner. In the spirit of the television drama, Midnight Diner is a gentle, moving and sometimes dryly amusing drama about the little stories in the big city known as Tokyo.

Product Information

The Master’s cooking and the friendly low-key atmosphere of his establishment fill the Midnight Diner night after night. One evening a burial urn left there brings a frown, but to his customers this is something new and it becomes the seed of entertaining speculation. An old customer, Tamako, comes in one night for the first time in a while. The mistress of a wealthy man who has died, she is between patrons, and strikes up a conversation with a young man. Michiru, a girl from the provinces without any money, walks out without paying her bill, then returns and begs the Master for a job. Living upstairs, she becomes part of the life of the diner, all the while her past is coming in search of her. Kenzo, a victim of the Fukushima tsunami disaster, comes to Tokyo and stirs things up in pursuit of Akemi, a diner regular. But through all of these small dramas, the question remains about what will become of the burial urn.

Late-night comfort food
Based on Abe Yaro's manga, TBS's Shinya Shokudo, a late-night series about a late-night alley diner that opens at midnight until the early morn, took a simple formula and turned it into an acclaimed franchise that ran for three seasons from 2009 to 2014. The mini-series, which always airs around midnight, devotes each half-hour episode mainly to the interactions and conversations of the patrons, small stories around the neighborhood, and how they converge at the Midnight Diner under the watchful gaze of Master, the enigmatic owner and chef who speaks little but seems to understand all. His diner offers no menu, but he always comes up with the right dish to satisfy late-night cravings.

Just as the series' introductory narration observes that the diner gets more customers than you'd think, Shinya Shokudo attracted more viewers than you'd think with its low-key premise. The usual crowd that shows up at the diner was big enough to not only keep the series going for three seasons, but also to bring the slice-of-life foodie human drama to the silver screen in 2015.

Directed by Matsuoka Joji who also worked on the TV series, Midnight Diner the movie is every bit the familiar old friend and plays like multiple linked episodes of the TV series. Besides Kobayashi Kaoru as Master, many of the TV series' regulars show up in the film including Matsushige Yutaka, Mitsuishi Ken, Ayata Toshiki, Fuwa Mansaku, Sudo Risa, Kaneko Kiyobumi and even Odagiri Joe, but in the role of a neighborhood patrol cop.

Those who enjoyed the TV series will enjoy the movie and those who don't know the series need not worry either, as the film tells standalone stories. The story threads include a mismatched couple who meet at the diner, a disaster volunteer who is trying to sort out her relationship with a victim whom she had helped, an urn of ashes that was left at the diner and, most significantly, a homeless young woman played by Tabe Mikako who takes refuge at the diner and becomes Master's assistant. The addition of another person behind the counter gives insight into how the diner is run and reveals a new side to Master, though no new information about him is divulged.

The stories themselves in Midnight Diner are nothing special, but they're told with the quiet warmth, chatty candor and realistic overtones that have made the Shinya Shokudo series so popular. Similarly, while the food dishes Master cooks up are never gourmet delights, they always look like they hit the spot just right for a midnight meal. Midnight Diner is the cinematic equivalent of late-night comfort food.

Midnight Diner is masterful Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
'Midnight Diner' essentially is the cinematic version of a short story collection, with four intertwining plots all revolving around the misfits and oddballs who satisfy their midnight food cravings at the Master's late-night diner.

The Master (Kobayashi Kaoru), the diner's owner and chef, is a mysterious figure, tall and bleak in appearance, with a long scar running down the left side of his worn face. His attempts to stay out of people's affairs inevitably fail, as he is regarded as a father/authority figure by his regular diners, who form a kind of informal family.

The movie features four primary stories: (1) the pampered mistress (Takaoka Saki) of a well-heeled business executive, after the death of the businessman, seeks shelter in the arms of a lonely salesman (Emoto Tokio), (2) a young woman (Tabe Mikako) from Niigata fleeing entanglements there becomes a temporary assistant to the Master, but those old entanglements seek to draw her back home, (3) a woman (Kikuchi Akiko) who offered volunteer help to the survivors of the Fukushima tsunami finds that a man (Tsutsui Michitaka) she aided has developed an obsessive love for her, and (4) in a wraparound story, an anonymous burial urn has been surreptitiously dropped off in the diner and the Master wrestles with what to do with it.

Each of the stories becomes engrossing, as do the colorful characters who frequent the cramped confines of the Master's diner. I'm so glad that there is a second film in this series I can watch because I hate to leave this little world behind. BTW, if you enjoyed this movie, I strongly recommend that you also check out director Matsuoka Joji's splendid earlier film 'Tokyo Tower: Mom and Me, and Sometimes Dad'.
