YesAsia Editorial Description

What does it take to become an idol? Popular actor Ji Hyun Woo (Attack the Gas Station 2), who previously played an idol singer in the TV drama Over the Rainbow, stars in the hot new youth movie Mr. Idol. Directed by Ra Hee Chan (Going By the Book), the movie follows the rise and struggles of an idol band. Real-life idol Jay Park, Jang Seo Won (Heartstrings), and Randy Kim complete the film's fictional boy band, Mr. Children, while Park Ye Jin (Head), Kim Su Ro (Vampire Cop Rocky), and Lim Won Hee (Dachimawa Lee) play music executives. Pop group U-Kiss and Nam Gyu Ri also make cameo appearances in Mr. Idol.

After a shocking tragedy on stage, rookie boy band Mr. Children and their producer Goo Joo (Park Ye Jin) go their separate ways. Three years later, Goo Joo returns to Korea, and this time she's determined to resurrect Mr. Children on her own terms without big agency backing. She manages to get the old crew - Jio (Jay Park), Hyun Yi (Jang Seo Won), and Ricky (Randy Kim) - back together again, but Mr. Children still needs a new vocalist. Enter indie band singer Yoo Jin (Ji Hyun Woo), who's not so interested in joining a pop group. Can the ragtag Mr. Children really transform into Mr. Idol?

Product Information

Director: Ra Hee Chan

Gu-ju is once a famous producer who left the music industry after one of her idol group members died of accident. One day, she encounters Yu-jin who was kicked out of an agency called ‘Star Music’ after years of training to be a singer. Gu-ju believes Yu-jin could be a star and produces an idol group called ‘Mr. Children’.

The talented group, ‘Mr. Children’, attracts public attention and their fans increase exponentially. Seeing this, ‘Star Music’ uploads the video of Yu-jin when he was a trainee in order to slander Yu-jin. As a result, Gu-ju, Yu-jin, and the members of “Mr. Children” face a hard time.

Good, but a bit of a heavy one Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Certainly no easy vocation this pop game malarkey. But "Mr Idol" is a movie that portrays such ventures through the musical passions of Yoo-jin (Hyeon-wo Ji), who finds himself pursued by ‘ice cold’ entertainment executive Goo-joo (Ye-jin Park) when she needs to revive her blighted boy band Mr Children, after their lead vocalist had committed suicide at one of their performances, causing Mr Children to be immediately disbanded. After the tragedy Goo-joo takes a 3 year leave time from Korea, but eventually returns and joins Hee-moon (So-ru Kim…hurrah!) of entertainment company Star Music, where Hee-moon as busily trained his new boy band Wonder Boys. Goo-joo disgruntled that Mr Children have more talent than WB, gets in rival conflict with Hee-moon and becomes determined to revive her ‘babies’ again to prove their talent. So Goo-joo locates the other Mr Children members and auditions for a new talented vocalist. This she finds in Yoo-jin, a part time worker who also performs as a vocalist with his indie rock band mates. (Both coincidently bumping into each other at Seoul airport when Goo-joo returns to Korea and where Yoo-jin’s bag goes runabout). But although at first Yoo-jin declines the audition offer, Goo-joo relentlessly pursues Yoo-jin to sign a contract and even gives him money for an operation for his sister’s sick child. The payback - Yoo-jin to become Mr Children’s lead singer and help resurrect Mr C. From then on Yoo-jin finds himself training in a music genre he’s less interested in, learning about the ice cold manner and broken heart of Goo-joo – a woman scarred by the death of one of her singers after she berated him; carrying the guilt she may have caused his suicide. In Yoo-jin she hopes for redemption, and to make him her pop Idol.

I first watched Hyeon-wo in movie “Fly High” which was a nice tragic romance and also the music themed TV K-drama “Over the Rainbow” and have liked Hyeon-wo whenever I get the pleasure to watch him (a nice dude). Likewise its always lovely to see Ye-jin (also in recent thriller “Head”) but she performs the proverbial ice maiden here as Goo-joo, rarely breaking into a smile; in fact her character referrers to herself as a robot. Although “Mr Idol” is about the K-pop variety world and featuring Jay Park, it isn’t for the faint hearted and quite heavy with little plot mirth. But the main song is pleasant and as a nice surreal ending. I bought the 3-disk, excellent extras but no subtitles on bonus disks.

an idol is born Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Maybe its because im into Kpop and sometimes dreaming that I should have went down the same road that I gave it the score I did. How true we don't know, but the movie briefly describes what most idols go through in korea to train to be who they are today. Does it really matter what they did in the past? everyone was young and if not still is, but who hasn't done something stupid. I think this movie was made to help the audience understand idols better.

The title song that they sing is repeated often, but its very easy to listen to, soothing, and then it goes upbeat during the chorus parts.

If you watched family outing. its nice to see park ye jin and kim sooro again.
