YesAsia Editorial Description

Return to a simpler time with Miyazaki Hayao's My Neighbor Totoro, an enchanting fantasy from the legendary Studio Ghibli. The animated classic tells the story of two sisters who discover a furry, bear-like animal and his hidden world of fantastic creatures in a forest near their new home. Despite a down-to-earth story told with simple, traditional animation techniques, Totoro has captivated the imagination of audiences for generations with its adorable characters and a genuine charm that will move viewers of all ages. Since its release in 1988, Totoro has become Studio Ghibli's most iconic work (the creature is now on the studio's logo), and it has also been called as one of the greatest animated films ever made.

A university professor moves to a house in the woods with his daughters Satsuki and Mei in order to be closer to his wife, who is recovering from a long-term illness in a hospital. While exploring the area around their new home, the girls discover a gray bear-like creature that they name Totoro. Eventually, the girls become friends with Totoro and discover a magical world hidden deep in the forest.

Blu-ray Edition includes storyboards (picture-in-picture), dubbing script, the credit-less version of the opening/ending sequences, and trailers.

Professional Review of "My Neighbor Totoro (Blu-ray) (Multi-Language & Subtitled) (Region Free) (Japan Version)"

September 9, 2004

This professional review refers to My Neighbor Totoro (DVD) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)
My Neighbor Totoro is a deceptively simple tale. It is the story of a father and his two young daughters moving to the country and adventures the two girls, Mei and Satsuki, have with the forest spirits they find there.

This simplicity makes My Neighbor Totoro one of the purest examples of Myazaki and Studio Ghibli's themes and preoccupations. There is the pleasure in discovery of the delights of rural life (Kiki's Delivery Service) and the interaction between humans and spirits (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away).

As with all Ghibli creations, the characters of Mei and Satsuki are beautifully realised. Both have distinct character traits that reflect both their age and personalities. Their conflict is not on a widescreen Lord of the Rings scale but deals with coping with their mother's illness. One of the most powerful moments is not a clash of massive CG armies but the arrival of a telegram informing them that their mother is too ill to return home.

Mei and Satsuki's encounters with the forest spirits is also reflection of their perceptions. Unlike the enraged wolf spirits of Mononoke, Totoro and co are warm, friendly and welcoming. Their behaviour is benevolent, coming to aid the sisters in their times of need.

All the elements in My Neighbor Totoro are presented with a fine sense of craftsmanship creating a simple tale with great emotional depth. Miyazaki's visualisations of the forest spirits are superb and because of the strength of his characters he can effortlessly blend elements that are both familiar and fantastic. So unforgettable are these scenes that they become embedded in your memory: Mei's encounter with the sleeping Totoro, Mei and Satsuki waiting for their father's bus on a dark and rainy night.

My Neighbor Totoro is yet another outstanding Studio Ghibli creation and for a film made in 1988, it is still fresh and vibrant as the day a human hand applied paint to each individual animation cel.

Ghibli goes Blu
I fear the arrival of any new video format on the market. Just a decade ago, DVD changed the way I saw movies, taking the luxurious LaserDisc experience into a much smaller, more affordable product that raised the bar on how people watch movies at home. Over the years, I had built a respectable collection of my favorite films in the best possible format available to normal consumers.

A few years later, Blu-ray arrived.

With nearly four times the capacity of a dual-layer DVD, a Blu-ray offers more than double the video resolution of a DVD. Ever since Blu-ray beat HD-DVD and became the prevalent high-definition video format, film companies have taken advantage of new remastering technologies and poured money to create new high-definition versions of older films. These remasterings are sometimes done so well that classic films that suffered from bad video transfers for decades are now getting new leases on life with a new generation of audiences.

Studio Ghibli is one of the companies that has taken great efforts to remaster their older films for high definition, starting with 1984's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind in 2010. Two years and multiple releases later, the studio finally released My Neighbor Totoro, one of the studio's most defining works (its titular character makes up the studio's logo) and one of my favorite films.

I cannot recall the first time I saw Totoro, which is likely why nostalgia doesn't factor into my love for the film. Instead, my own love for it stems from its ability to make me feel like a child again, taking me back to the days when I could still be enchanted by a film.

The story of Totoro is remarkably simple: Kids move to the countryside, meet magical creatures, and become their friends. Director Miyazaki Hayao captures his audience's imagination with charming moments rather than with the story or technologically advanced animation (the film was entirely hand-drawn). Scenes like the Kusakabe girls' bus stop encounter with Totoro, the appearance of the soot spirits, and the final cat bus rescue have long been engrained in pop culture over the last two decades. They are what make My Neighbor Totoro the classic film it is regarded as today.

I've seen Totoro on various formats (including VHS and DVD), and it has absolutely never looked better than it does right now on Blu-ray. The image is crisp, the colors burst out of the screen, and Hisaishi Joe's score envelope my speakers like never before. With Totoro, Ghibli continues to show consumers that their high-definition releases are not just part of an evil moneymaking tactic, but rather an excellent example of how to preserve classic films. If anyone asks me to show them one film to convince them to upgrade to Blu-ray, Totoro would be on the top of a very short list. It is not only one of my favorite films; it is now also one of my favorite Blu-ray discs in my collection.

VCD Quality GOOD but.... Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
THis VCSD has redubbed new version for Cantonese and it is not the original version, the old cantonese version is so much better but i dont think is has release on VCD or DVD.
ive Watched this on VHS when i was little, so much memory!
but i do hope they release the old version of cantonese because the characters just reminded me their lovely and funy quotes. the new version isnt as good and they've changed some of the lines which is disapointing me.
i do find the little girl isnt as much character since they redubbed.
apart from the dubbed, they've remastered the picture, colour is much brighter.

i give 6/10.

Yet a simple movie, the story is very endearing and it captured my heart. The characters are fun and interesting and the music in the movie sounds so sweet and magical. I enjoy watching all of Miyazaki's movies, but this one is definitely my favorite!
