Though the price tag is hefty, the Special Limited Edition of Nell's The Trace is very much worth the splurge as it comes with both the band's latest EP and concert DVD, plus various goodies to accompany the great music. Nell may not have the dreamy looks of the idol bands, but one would be hard pressed to find a Korean act that puts out dreamier music. The band's moody progressive alternative rock cuts from the same cloth as Brit-rock bands like Coldplay, Placebo, and Radiohead, but delivered with a more balladic softness that brings them closer to the tastes of the K-pop mainstream.
The crowning glory of this release is Nell's July 19, 2008 Seoul concert. Other than the idol standards, Korean concert DVD releases are hard to come by, and a Korean rock concert DVD is pretty much rarer than a blue moon. The concert is as straight-shooting as they come - no frills, just Nell. The band opens with an ethereal rendition of Down, courtesy of keyboard, synthesizer, and Kim Jong Wan's expressive voice. It's a surprisingly soft way to start off a rock concert, but the number just about epitomizes the haunting, heart-piercing appeal of Nell's music. The guitars jump back in for the second number 1:03, off their most recent album Separation Anxiety.
The concert covers a good selection of Nell's music in the last decade. As expected, they perform the most pieces from Separation Anxiety, but their earlier works are also represented like Minus from their indies-era Speechless and Stay, "Parasite", and "Words That Shouldn't Be Trusted" off their 2003 album Let It Rain. Their current interpretations of earlier works highlight how the band's style has evolved and refined over the years. Of course, there are fans who will always prefer the grittier, raw cuts of Nell's early years, but I find their present softer style to be less a deliberate move toward the mainstream (as some fans fear) than the results of the band's growth and redefining of their music.
The Trace EP itself comes with four innocuously titled and beautifully rendered tracks. Part 1 begins the mini-album's story with a lilting, rhythmic melody and heartrending lyrics, while the more uptempo Part 2 completes the wispy, lyrical whole. I actually prefer the piano acoustic version of Part 2, which sounds more raw and expressive, but Act 5 would have to be my favorite track of the CD as the softly piercing lyrics and airy melody whisper declarations of love.
In addition to the concert DVD and EP, this collector's set comes with various extras to justify the price tag. A second DVD goes behind the scenes with interview clips and backstage footage; since Nell isn't exactly the kid-around-on-stage type, the snippets of backstage laughs should be interesting for fans. There are also postcards and a notebook diary (which is admittedly more space filler than useful), all packaged in a nice big box.

One of the best purchases I've made. I normally do not write reviews...but I felt that I should say a few things for those who are still considering making the purchase. Or new fans looking to add to their collection. I believe it deserves a better overall score than 8.
The quality of the packaging is beyond excellent. The items listed (CD/DVDs, photobook, diary/blank book) come inside a large, matte-black box that opens up like a book (held closed by a magnetic strip at the top). The items themselves are contained inside individual hardcover books. Each book has a different rusty shade of color.
The photocards are inside a sleeve that's attached to the inside of the cover. Much like Nell's music, there is an artsy feel to the packaging. It has become a collectors item for me...and I'm sure any die-hard Nell fan would not regret making the purchase.
As for the DVD, I love the heart put into the performance. I think the others said it best, so there is not much more that I can add. The video quality is okay for it's time, and a non-issue. Paying the high price for this product is worth it to support the band I love.

Hands down, this is the best concert I've ever watched (even better than the concerts I've actaully attended). The vocals were excellent from beginning to end. I've always been a fan of NELL's and was anticiapting a concert by them, and I must say that it exceeded all of my expectations. I loved all the songs performed (even the one's I'd never heard before).
This concert just proves why NELL of one of the best korean rock bands. They will forever have my respect and me as a fan.
The Trace follows NELL on their long journey from the oldests hits to their recent ones. The performance is simply amazing and it's hard to find words that describe it.
The only thing that was sad was the fact that they sang '12 Seconds' as the last song. It made me emotional and adding on to the fact that the drummer of the band will be serving his military time simply hit home for me that I won't be able to hear NELL for a while...but even so, I'm grateful to this band for every song they've made for us listeners and I will be satisfied with the music I do have by them and will still be a fan when they're absent for a few years.
I do believe it is worth it's price (but I simply don't have the money for it. If i did, I would definitely buy this and I will when I get the money). Hopefully, for those who still can't afford the price, there will be a normal edition to buy later.

Even though it's pretty expensive for most students like me, I ordered it and I am 100% satisfied with my decision.
Nell is my favorite band and I believe it's a must-get dvd for every nell fan out there.
The drummer is currently serving in the army and it will be at least two years until they come out again with a new album.
This might be the only dvd that they may make (during the interview from the dvd)..
So go ahead and save up some money to buy this amazing live concert of Nell.
You won't regret it.
