Written and directed by Sung Hsin Yin, On Happiness Road won Best Animation Feature at the 55th Golden Horse Awards and the Grand Prize, Audience Award and Best Animation at the 20th Taipei Film Awards. Featuring voice acting by Guey Lun Mei, Wei Te Sheng, Chen Bo Zheng and Liao Hui Chun, the warm and nostalgic animation follows a woman's return to Taiwan after years abroad and her memories of childhood and coming of age. On Happiness Road is both a bittersweet love letter to Taiwan and an intimate yet universal story about growing up, looking back and forging forward on the bumpy road of life.
Lin Shu Chi (voiced by Guey Lun Mei) was born in Taiwan, on April 5, 1975, the same day that Chiang Kai-shek passed way. As a child, she lived on Happiness Road and dreamed of changing the world. After she grew up, she didn't change the world but her dream would eventually take her far from home to the U.S. Years later, she returns to Taipei upon news of her grandmother's death, and reflects on how people and places have changed and not changed over the years.

世界各地の映画祭を席巻し、台湾映画史上初の快挙を続ける傑作アニメーション。台北郊外に実在する通り"幸福路(こうふくろ)"を舞台に、主人公チーと下町に生きる人々の姿を、素朴で温かみのあるタッチと技巧を凝らしたファンタジックな映像を交えて描いた。アニメーション産業不毛の地、台湾から突如生まれたこの作品は、東京アニメアワードフェスティバル2018でグランプリを受賞後、各地の国際映画祭で受賞を重ね、ついには2019年アカデミー賞R長編アニメーションの25作品にエントリーされるなど話題を呼んできた。実写映画のキャリアを持つソン・シンイン監督は、この半自伝的な物語を映画化するにあたり、成長にともなう残酷さや痛さを温かみのあるノスタルジーに変換するため、経験のなかったアニメーションという手法を選択。独力で資金集めに奔走し、ついには自らアニメーションスタジオを設立した。幾度の危機を乗り越え、4年の制作期間を経て完成した1本作は、そのクオリティの高さとストーリーテリングの豊かさで、日本のアニメーターやアニメファンを驚かせ、世界中の異なる文化を持つ観客から"自分たちの物語"だと絶賛されている。 ――アメリカで暮らすチーの元に、台湾の祖母が亡くなったと連絡が入る。久しぶりに帰ってきた故郷、台北郊外の幸福路は記憶とはずいぶん違っている。運河は整備され、遠くには高層ビルが立ち並ぶ。同級生に出会っても、相手はチーのことが分からない。自分はそんなに変わってしまったのか――。チーは自分の記憶をたどりはじめる。空想好きだった幼い頃は、毎日が冒険だった。金髪に青い目のチャン・ベティと親友になってからの日々、両親の期待を背負っての受験勉強。学生運動に明け暮れ、大学卒業後は記者として忙殺される毎日を送った。そして友との別れ。現実に疲れたチーは、従兄のウェンを頼ってアメリカに渡る。そこで出会ったトニーと結婚し、両親にもアメリカで幸せになることを誓ったけれど・・・。今、夫から離れて幸福路のいるチーは、昔と同じように祖母の助けを必要としている。実は人生の大きな岐路に立っていたチーは、幸福路である決断をする――。
