YesAsia Editorial Description

Folk hero Ma Wing Jing gets a 21st century makeover from producer Wong Jing and director Wong Ching Po (Revenge A Love Story) in Once Upon a Time in Shanghai. This stylishly filmed martial arts action saga stars rising action star Philip Ng (From Vegas to Macau) as a tough young fighter who single-handedly takes on the underworld in 1930s Shanghai. Once Upon a Time in Shanghai features spectacular action choreographed by martial arts legend Yuen Woo Ping and a suspenseful drama between two good men standing on the opposite sides of morality. The film also co-stars Andy On (As the Light Goes Out), Sammo Hung (Ip Man 2), Jiang Luxia (Ip Man: The Final Fight) and Yuan Cheung On (Once Upon a Time in China).

Known for stirring up trouble in his rural village with his powerful fist, Ma Wing Jing (Philip Ng) moves to glamorous Shanghai to start a new life. As the Pacific War looms, the city is ruled by organized crime, particularly a young rising gangster named Long Qi (Andy On). When Wing Jing's naïve sense of righteousness compels him to sabotage Long Qi's latest drug shipment, Long Qi decides to take Wing Jing under his wing, and the two powerful fighters become good friends. However, this period of peace quickly ends when the top bosses of the underworld decide to work with the Japanese to bring Long Qi down.

Product Information

In the early 20th century, labourers from all over the country were rushing to the flourishing city of Shanghai. Ma Yongzhon (Philip Ng), a youthful man from Shandong, arrived at this prosperous city working as a dock labourer. During those days, Shanghai was shadowed by two local gangs: Axe Fraternity and Long Qi (Andy On). Long Qi, the boss of Paradise Club, was a relatively righteous man. He adored Yongzhen’s amazing martial arts skills and fearless quality, and wanted to take him under his wing. However, Yongzhen would rather earn his money in an honest and hardworking way. That being said, due to common interests, Yongzhen and Qi eventually became great friends.

Qi, who refused to betray his country for the Japanese Government and opposed to the idea of drug trafficking, quickly made enemies with Axe Fraternity’s gang leaders: Baldy Bai (Chan Koon-Tai), Laughing Buddha (Yuen Cheung-Yan), and Scruffy Chou (Fung Hak-On). Their hatred intensified when Yongzhen and Qi interfered with their drug trafficking business.

Yongzhen lived next door to a street performer Master Tie (Sammo Hung) and his two daughters: Tie Mei (Jiang Luxia) and Tie Ju (Michelle Hu). Yongzhen was attracted to Ju’s tough personality, while Ju admired his sense of righteousness and had a good impression on Yongzhen. On the other hand, Qi was infatuated with singer, Sheng Xiangjun (Mao Junjie), not knowing that his love would put him in danger later.
