YesAsia Editorial Description

From the venerable Shaw Brothers studio comes One-Armed Swordsman, the 1967 wuxia film that changed the face of Hong Kong cinema forever! Directed by legendary filmmaker Zhang Che (a.k.a. Chang Cheh) with action choreography by Lau Ka Leung and Tong Gai, this internationally successful film launched the career of Jimmy Wang Yu, who portrays the iconic title character. When the Golden Sword School finds itself under siege, it is up to a faithful disciple (Guk Fung) to put his life on the line to protect both his master and his fellow students. Tragically, the brave hero is killed in the process, but before he dies, he passes on his precious Broken Sword and convinces Master Qi Rufeng (Ting Fung) to accept his son Fang Gang as his own. The film then flashes forward to follow the adventures of a now grown-up Fang (Jimmy Wang Yu), who has become the top student at the martial arts school. Even so, he is hated by his jealous classmates. One snowy evening, a dejected Fang meets up with a group of students led by the master's spoiled daughter (Pan Yin Tze). When Fang refuses to fight her, the daughter becomes enraged and chops off his arm!

Miraculously, Fang escapes with his life and crosses paths with a pretty country girl named Hsiao Man (Chiao Chiao). She plays nursemaid to the fallen hero and eventually shares her father's half-burned kung fu manual with him as well. With renewed determination, Fang Gang adapts to his handicap, becoming a formidable warrior in his own right. But his newfound mastery of martial arts is challenged when he discovers that the Golden Sword School is once again under attack by the same villains who murdered Fang Gang's father! Will he return to the school to defend it as his father did before him? Or will he retire from the world of martial arts as he promised Hsiao Man? Watch and learn in this classic Shaw Brothers film, which spawned two official sequels, several similar spin-offs, the international team-up picture, Zatoichi Meets the One-Armed Swordsman, and the unofficial sequel One-Armed Swordsmen!

This special trilogy boxset offers a collection of the three Chang Cheh's kung fu box office smashes, namely One-armed Swordsman (1967), Return of the One-armed Swordsman (1969) and New One-armed Swordsman (1971).

Professional Review of "One Armed Swordsman Trilogy"

April 2, 2008

Cheng Cheh's classic One Armed Swordsman Trilogy strongly influenced the era of "macho" stylised Kung Fu movies in Hong Kong. The three movies in the Trilogy were written for the screen by the legendary fictionist Ni Kuang and choreographed by the renowned Kung Fu actor Lau Ka Leung.

Cheng Cheh, the Godfather of Kung Fu movies, introduced a theme that matched macho ideology with chivalry and violence, heralding a trend of male-dominated casting. One Armed Swordsman (1967) turned Cheng into the very first director to make a movie that recorded one million at the box office in both Hong Kong and Taiwan. This blockbuster also spawned a series of sequels inherited with uniquely untrammeled filming style and aesthetics soaked in blood. However, the heroes in Cheng's movie world are not immortal. The high impact action they displayed were masterly skilful and highly realistic, i.e., however tough the protagonists were, they could still die in the end. Another characteristic of Cheng's martial-arts movies is that the spirit of chivalry was often threatened by the fatal intrusion of women. But the blood of women would never stain the sword of a man. Heroes would only shed blood for the sake of fellowship. This kind of brotherhood among swordsmen soon raised the bar for the subsequent heroic movies to follow.

One Armed Swordsman

Fang Gang (Jimmy Wang) is raised by the master of a kung fu school who owes his life to Fang's father. Dubbed as the school's inheritor, Fang is however derided by his fellow students, in particular by the master's only daughter Qi Pei (Pan Yin-tze), for his humble background. When Fang refuses to fight in a duel, Qi mutilates him. The now crippled swordsman is nursed back to health by a young lady Xiao Man (Chiu Kou) whose father teaches Fang a devastating one-armed fighting style. Learning that his master is attacked by the Long-Armed Devil (Yang Zhi-qing), Fang volunteers to help using the broken sword left by his late father and the newly acquired fighting style. In the end, Fang and Xiao retire into obscurity together.

Return of the One Armed Swordsman

Return of the One Armed Swordsman offered an enriched cast with other Kung Fu masters like Tien Feng and Ng Ma. Cheng Chah crafted many novel combat scenes to let Jimmy Wang flex both his acting and fighting muscles. This sequel goes on telling the retired lives led by Fang and his wife Xiao that are threatened by evil bandits. Return of the One Armed Swordsman crossed the HK$1.29 million mark at the box office just 13 days after it hit the market crowning the top of Hong Kong's blockbuster charts in February 1969.

New One Armed Swordsman

Due to the departure of Jimmy Wang from Shaw Brothers, New One Armed Swordsman teams David Keung up with Di Lung in the last movie of the Trilogy. Swordsman Lei Li (David Keung) is set up by another veteran called Long Yi-zhi (Goo Fung), losing his right arm in the event. When Lei seeks refuge in a small restaurant, he also encounters the love of his life- Ba Jiao (Li Jung). However, Jin Fen and Jin Yi members of a wicked gang also catch sight of this beautiful lady and it is only because of Feng Jun-jie's (Di Lung) help that Lei can fight off the two gangsters. The two young swordsmen become the closest of friends, but Feng is later killed by Long. Lei soon unleashes invincible martial arts skills to avenge his buddy and finally, takes the life of Long. More than 30 years after its debut, the New One Armed Swordsman is still able to attract international interest. As a result, the classic martial arts film has been invited for a special screening in the "Cannes Classics" section at the 57th Cannes International Film Festival.

old, old school classic Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
The trilogie is very good ( the first one being the best ) for the time it was made. I think that young audience will not appreciate those movies to there real value cause, compared with other classic - ex: Dirty Ho- ) it does not stand the test of time as well.

Tri-fecta Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
When I watched the original swordsman by Jimmy, my dad reminded me that he took me to see it in HK in the late 1960's and you had the buy tickets in advance since it was always sold out. That's how great this movie was back at the times. Still recalled the Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns were also box office rivlas with shaw brother movies at the times in HK. Just reminiscing old times. The second swordsman movie is ok as the saga continues with expanded "swordsplay" as a gimmick to attract audience and box office. What can you say about the new one arm swordsman with david chang and ti lung, they were at their prime. I highly recommend the trilogy.

Utter brilliance! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This incredible Box Set is a must-have for anyone professing to be a fan of classic Hong Kong Swordplay films!
Not only are these films absolutely among the best ever made---they are so very influential.
I doubt seriously if we would have ever seen the Heroic Bloodshed films of directors like John Woo, and many others, if it had not been for these beautiful works.

The films in this set are presented in unbeatable, digitally remastered prints that are nothing short of astounding. Also, the packaging on this set is truly beautiful!

I heartily recommend this collection to everyone!

One armed swordsman Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Back in the sixties in San Francisco, I was just a 7 year old and one of the most anticipated events on Sundays were when my father took me to chinatown to the Great Star Theate on Jackson St. to watch new releases of Shaw Brothers movies. The first movie I ever saw there was "One Armed Swordsman" with Jimmy Wang. The buzz was there (it was the first Hong Kong movie to break a million in Hong Kong) with long lines, and the air filled with excitment. Keep in mind that movie buffs had to wait a minimum of 8 months before we get to watch it in SF. Needless to say I was hooked since. The movie itself was great and you will see why. The actual fighting is primitive and slow, but hey, this was the infancy of martial arts movies. See if you can catch a glimse of Yuan Wo Ping as an extra !!! This is a must get classic collection. The soundtrack was also a trademark of the one armed one. Hurrah for old school !!!!!

Wow! A must-see Shaw classics for all swordsplay fans!

Part one "The one armed swordsman" by Jimmy Wang has more dialogue than action, but still impressed the viewers with its interesting plot.

Part two " Return of the one armed swordsman" is action packed with different types of weapons demonstrated.

Finally " The new one armed swordsman" by David Chiang and Ti Lung comprises of both thriler and actions.

Superb Shaw Classics! Must see !
