YesAsia Editorial Description

Patlabor, or Mobile Police Patlabor, is a classic name to anime fans. The police mecha franchise is the brainchild of Headgear, which consists of screenwriter Ito Kazunori, composer Kawai Kenji, scenarist Yuki Masami, character designer Takada Akemi, and, most notably, director Oshii Mamoru. The popular franchise has over the years spawned a manga, three anime series, and three feature-length films, the first of which was released in 1989. Directed by Oshii, this second Patlabor film was released in 1993 and, like other entries in the franchise, revolves around the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Special Vehicle Division 2 unit, which investigates crimes and accidents involving labor robots, or labors.

Set three years after the events of the first movie, Patlabor 2 is darker and more mature than previous franchise releases, venturing into greater political and philosophical musings and implications. When a United Nations Labors team is attacked, it marks the beginning of war for Japan. As time ticks down, the Special Vehicle Division and other Japanese police units rush to prepare Japan against impending terrorist attacks, and panic slowly settles in the streets of Tokyo. Matters become even more complicated when the team discovers that the leader of the terrorist group is Captain Nagumo's former teacher and lover.
