YesAsia Editorial Description

Patlabor, or Mobile Police Patlabor, is a classic name to anime fans. The police mecha franchise is the brainchild of Headgear, which consists of screenwriter Ito Kazunori, composer Kawai Kenji, scenarist Yuki Masami, character designer Takada Akemi, and, most notably, director Oshii Mamoru. The popular franchise has over the years spawned a manga, three anime series, and three feature-length films, the first of which was released in 1989. Directed by Oshii, the first Patlabor film, like other entries in the franchise, revolves around the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Special Vehicle Division 2 unit, which investigates crimes and accidents involving labors or labor robots.

In the center of the messy construction that is Tokyo Bay lies the Ark, a giant man-made steel tower island where labors are manufactured. One day, programmer Hoba Eichi jumps to his death from the Ark. Soon after construction and military labors begin to malfunction, going on destructive rampages on their own accord. SV.2 traces the source of the problem to a new software program that was recently installed to all labors, including possibly the police's own Patlabor team. The program was created by Hoba, seemingly as a deliberate plan to bring destruction, and the unit must figure out how to reverse its effects before it's too late.

Patlabor is aging well Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
The late 1980s were heady days for Japan. The nation's economy was red-hot, real estate values were soaring, and the skyline of Tokyo was being transformed. Yet rapid change inevitably produces unease -- a fear that something profound is being lost in the wake of 'progress'. This is the context which shaped director Oshii Mamoru's 1989 film "Patlabor: The Movie".

Something is amiss with Japan's 'labors', giant manned robots which have revolutionized the construction industry. Increasingly, these great machines building Tokyo's new skyscrapers are running amok, creating the kind of urban devastation familiar from Godzilla movies. Tokyo's Metropolitan Police Special Vehicle Division 2 unit is tasked with finding the problem.

"Patlabor" becomes a detective story: Computer geeks are tasked with finding the flaws in the labors' operating system (a computer virus is suspected), while police investigators seek to understand the cryptic Bible verses (pertaining to the ill-fated Tower of Babel) left behind by the mysterious creator of that operating system. Scriptwriter Ito Kazunori enlivens the film's colorful characters with humor and spins a tale of great suspense, culminating in a truly surprising solution.

I enjoyed "Patlabor: The Movie" when I first saw it twenty years ago, and like it even more now. Highly recommended for all fans of mecha anime.
