September 9, 2021 Hong Kong Blu Ray edition is a win!!This review of Farewell My Concubine is for the Hong Kong Region A Blu Ray. In short, it's everything I hoped for. I had left a review for the Korean Blu Ray a while back which was somewhat negative. I had hoped for a long time that a Hong Kong edition of this masterpiece would one day be available and it finally is. Hong Kong consistently produces high quality Blu Rays based on my experience and this edition of Farewell My Concubine does not dissapoint. The video quality is superb, with sharp imagery and vibrant colors and the English subtitles are fairly consistent with the US DVD release that came out many years ago. This is likely the best version of the film available. I am thrilled that this film has received the treatment that it deserves. There are other Blu Ray editions of this film available but now that I own the Hong Kong Blu Ray my search for a top quality Blu Ray is finally at an end. I hope that this will be the beginning of future Hong Kong releases of Chen Kaige's films. I would particularly like to see Temptress Moon and The Emperor and The Assassin get this level of treatment. August 30, 2015 Wong Kar Wai's greatest triumph!As the reviews for this film seem divided, I'll offer my thoughts. Being a Wong Kar Wai fan, the first time I saw this film I wasn't sure what to think. It was not what I would typically expect from this renowned director nor what I would expect from a martial arts movie. Since then, I have grown to love this film. It is one of a kind, a film to be understood on its own merits.
Admittedly I have not seen the other movies about Ip Man, but I am content with The Grandmaster. This film shows his life in a beautifully artistic and realistic way. It is not all action, although there is plenty of that. I find the slower, character driven scenes more fascinating, which is where Wong Kar Wai shines as a director.
As for the Blu Ray quality, this would be one of my choices to play for a guest to show off my entertainment center. Visually, this may be the best Blu Ray I own. Also, the Hong Kong edition is considerably longer than the American edition so, as usual, I would recommend the Hong Kong Edition. Without spoiling the film, the U.S. edition deleted parts that add so much to the movie. I have found that Hong Kong Blu Rays are the way to go in general.
As for the film, it is a dark tale about three bandits who join the military to feed their village and rise up through the ranks only to draw apart in disastrous ways. Takeshi Kaneshiro and Andy Lau are excellent as always, but Jet Li shines more than usual. The martial arts films I have seen of his do not show his ability to act like The Warlords does. His performance is truly impressive.

August 30, 2015 As good as (maybe better than) Red Cliff!A truly excellent movie! Taking place during the Chinese Civil War, this film shows a unique balance between romance and war. It is a character driven film, showing how war affects three couples. It is a moving film that is well acted and directed. The scenes dealing with romance are beautiful while the war sequences are intense. The Blu Ray quality is visually superb and the audio is more well balanced than most Blu Rays with sound effects like explosions and gun fire. I'm eagerly anticipating Part 2. Well done! I had hoped for a better picture quality like I have seen on other blu rays but I found this one lacking. However this edition is probably the best you will find at this time. I must say I am very pleased with this product. Containing 136 songs on five discs, the music is fresh, colorful, and pleasing, capturing Teresa Teng at an exciting time. Her best work was undoubtedly recorded later when she was with Polydor Records, but the era of music contained in this box set has a charm that satisfies the Teresa Teng fan. March 5, 2010 Lovely music!I am very glad I got this product. The music is beautiful. Most of it is instrumental, which is great, and there are two songs with vocals that are magnificent. The DVD was fun to watch even though I didn't understand a word of it. I hope Musou Band will continue to make wonderful music in the future. In the meantime I am hooked on these CDs.
