Based on Sugitani Shogo's manga series, the animated feature Pompo: The Cinephile is a spirited love letter to filmmaking. Written and directed by veteran animator Hirao Takayuki, Pompo: The Cinephile features animation by CLAP, a new studio established by the team behind In This Corner of the World.

Gene works as a production assistant for bold and talented movie producer Pompo. A film buff through and through, Gene remembers every movie he's seen and dreams of making his own movie someday, but he's too anxious and insecure about his abilities. However, Pompo entrusts him with the production of a 15-second commercial, and it gets good reviews. One day, Pompo suddenly hands Gene her next movie script MEISTER, the comeback work of a legendary actor, and tasks him to direct it.

映画を愛する青年の映画制作を描いた話題作「映画大好きポンポさん」が劇場アニメーション化! 監督と脚本を務めるのは『劇場版「空の境界」第五章 矛盾螺旋』、『GOD EATER』などを手がけてきた平尾隆之。キャラクターデザインは『ソードアート・オンライン』シリーズ、『WORKING!!』の足立慎吾。アニメーションは『この世界の片隅に』チームが立ち上げた新進気鋭の制作会社CLAPが担当。――敏腕映画プロデューサー・ポンポさんのもとで製作アシスタントをしているジーン。映画に心を奪われた彼は、観た映画をすべて記憶している映画通だ。映画を撮ることにも憧れていたが、自分には無理だと卑屈になる毎日。だが、ポンポさんに15秒CMの制作を任され、映画づくりに没頭する楽しさを知るのだった。ある日、ジーンはポンポさんから次に制作する映画『MEISTER』の脚本を渡される。伝説の俳優の復帰作にして、頭がしびれるほど興奮する内容。大ヒットを確信するが・・・なんと、監督に指名されたのはCMが評価されたジーンだった!
